Default Can I believe Compcams?

I called Compcams today for a replacement cam recommendation. I have a stock 04 A4 coupe, however I have upgraded the differential to a 3.42 ratio. I told the tech guy that I wanted to improve low end torque and don’t plan any additional mods. He recommended their XR269HR-14 with these specs.

Duration at .05 216/220
Lobe Lift .309/.313
LSA 114

Anyone running this cam?

Do you agree with his recommendation?

If I install this cam will I need to change the valve springs?

Thanks

That cam should run real well in a daily driven A4.

Yes to pushrods and springs.

Are you swapping heads at the same time?

That looks like a good cam for low end torque

Here are the stock cam numbers:

LS-1 2001+ 198/208 500/500 116
LS-6 207/217 525/525 116

My budget can't handle new heads right now.

Dumb questions, can I change the springs without pulling the heads?

Yes you can, and the best tool out there is the Crane/Vinci tool. It is around $90 but worth every penny. What is the advance on that cam? I am running a VHP cam of similar numbers, it is for an auto although I have a stick. 216/224 .551/.551 LSA 115 with a 5* ground in advance. Very good low power and it peaks at 5,900 RPM.

The tech guy said it is ground with a 2* advance so I will probably install it with 2* more for a total of 4*

Not a lot of lift, why not look at one of the VHP cams (Crane). The advance will be ground in so you don't have to deal with special sprockets to advance the cam and you will get more lift from it as well.

That lift is actually .525/.532 You have to multiply the .3 numbers by 1.7 (Rockers).

I had multiplied that out, still not a lot of lift.

Can anyone recommend a good maintenance manual I could get that would have the information (i.e. torque specs) I need for the cam swap?

GM Service Manual along with LS1Howto.com I took the LS1Howto.com instructions, which are for heads and cam, and modified them for cam only.

Forgive my barging in with nothing to offer, but I am absolutely amazed that you guys know all this stuff. I can't imagine how you collect such detailed, specialized knowledge in an area that I would assume to be constantly changing with each new engine or part development.

How the heck do you do it?

I am running that cam (see my sig). It's a good sleeper cam and has stock-like driveability.

This is good info I did not know about the ls1howto.com site. After reading over the H/C swap directions I have one more question. I will not be replacing the heads, will I be able to get the lifters out. From the directions on ls1howto.com it looks like the heads have to come of to get to the lifters.

you shouldnt have to remove the lifters, with the rockers off you can rotate the cam to get the lifters up out of the way then you use a dowel rod to keep them up, I think the instrucs are on the ls1 site

I am running Patriot 5.3L heads. Not the best flowing heads out there but they are a good value and already come with good springs installed.

If replacing lifters, yes, heads must come off but as stated earlier unless you have a lot of miles your lifters are likely OK. You will need to hold them up though, especially on a higher mileage car.
