I'm putting a Honker on my car, and I'm at the part where I need to remove the front radiator shroud to cut the hole. I can't figure out how to get the darned metal clips off of the plastic pins that hold it to the AC condensor. They look threaded but it doesn't look like a socket will go on them. I can barely get my fingers on to them, much less turn them. How do they come off?
I fought with them quite a while myself, in the end after about an hour they broke and then I thought, I just should have broken them to start with. I went to Autozone and bought an assortmant pack of them, put two new ones on and left off the metal nuts.
That worked, and I didn't break the plastic pins. Now, with the shroud out, I can remove the metal clips and put the plastic pins back in place so that when I put it all together I can be in good shape.
I don't think you really need the little metal clips. When mine went back in it pressed together so tight the clip wouldn't do anything even if I did put them back on. They were probably for easier assembly at the factory just to hold things together before they got all the rest of the stuff bolted together, much like the same style clip on the brake rotors.
You have to grab each with a needlenose plier and twist - one side, then the other. It does help to have spares, but I did reuse mine. More time is spent here than with anything else when it comes to pulling the lower cover - always a pain!
