Default Battery Tender Failed - Would it harm electrical system?

Haven't driven the car for a few weeks due to the incessant rain and some other personal commitments. I went into the garage the other day and found the lights off on my Battery Tender and to my horror the foul smell of burnt electrical parts coming from the Battery Tender itself.

Since the key was not in the car and the car was off, I wouldn't think that if a voltage spike or other problem occurred when the Battery Tender met its demise would harm the PCM or other electrical systems in the car, would it?

All depends on how it failed.
Things happen sometimes with shorted electronics and it takes out parts it shouldn't have.
Does the car start.
Hopefully it the tender damaged anything it was only the battery.
Several companies make a good battery tender. The one you buy for $30.00 at autozone is not a good one I have burned a few of those up over the years.
21cmc sells a good one

If it's a real BATTERY TENDER, contact the manufacturer. They are warrantied for 10 years.

I had a WallMart Black & Decker brand battery tender go bad. I measured the output and it was zero volts. It did NOT hurt the car or battery. They replaced under warrenty. The brand sent back to me was a different brand, but the same battery tender.

won't hurt anything. Worst case would be that it directly shorted out in which case it could take out your battery, but current follows the path of least resistance and it would do any harm downstream.

once had my BT plugged in during a bad t-storm....when i went out to garage...BT was off. I contacted cust service...they said it's ok...has internal breakers so it shut itself off during electrical spike...just pulled plug & re-inserted...no damage to unit...or car!
