I recently purchased a 97 Coupe 6-speed with 60k miles on it with a few known problems. I hope you guys can help before I shell out too much money or get ripped off. The first is a high pitched humming noise(sounds like a small electric motor) at all times coming from behind my LR tire close to the gas tank. The second is only after start up and for a couple of minutes only. It is coming from around the tranny or drive shaft, and makes a high pitched rythmic noise. No knocking or grinding at all. Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
97 & early 98 C5's had known noisy fuel pumps. There was a TSB that explained the issue and when the car was under warranty, if the customer requested, GM replaced the pump with a newer version that was less noisy. I had it done on my 98 coupe. There isn't anything wrong other than the noise.
As for the other problem,,,can you record it??
Glad you getting your facts here instead of shelling out bucks to the dealer!!

Concur on the fuel pump.

Two questions: 1, does this happen when in neutral with the clutch released? 2. If not, does this happen when the engine rpm is low and you are accelerating?
If #1, then the first thing I'd do is change the transmission fluid.
If #2, then what you are hearing is normal gear noise, and will happen every time you have low engine rpm (maybe 1000-1200 rpm) while in gear.
Thanks guys for the input. The car is no longer under warranty, do any of you know what kind of fuel pump was exchanged into the car. I'm not having any drivability issues, I just like hearing the car when I'm driving and it gets pretty annoying. As far as the noise coming from under the car, it is only at lower RPMs and only in first gear or neutral, as soon as I get it into 2nd or higher all you can hear is the engine. Shifts fine thru every gear. If it's normal, I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks again.
