C5 shifter installation
1) Make sure you have a #15, #20 & #40 Torx (star) driver, a 10mm socket, and a 3/8" socket. You will need these tools to do the work.
2) I replaced the entire mechanism, including the base (not just the shifter itself). I wasn't sure if the internals were different.
2) In pulling out the "demon key," be careful when you pry it up. I broke both ends of it trying to get it out and ended up using a pliers to pull it out. Now I know why it is named so eloquently.
3) Be VERY careful when pulling out the boot ring. It is made of plastic and the tabs can break pretty easily. If you are installing a new boot, it is a good idea to order another boot ring, just in case (however, it only comes with the boot so you can't order it separately: approx $80).
4) Make sure, when the new shifter & mechanism is installed, you pull up on the neutral alignment pin. If you are looking at the shifter in place, it is closest to the front of the car. It comes out of a black round piece. Then, the shifter will move.
Good luck!
