Default LS6 upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my LS1 to LS6 heads and cam.. I am not looking to be too aggressive with the cam but I figure if you are already taking the motor apart why not.. What would you all recommend? Would I need to swap the intake manifold also for the head upgrade? I was told that TSP is the place to get the best LS6 heads at the best price.. Thanks for you help..

If you are not looking for the upper limits in HP just get your heads redone and a good cam.

Sounds like you want what I had done to my 1997 A4 C5.
I wanted a "sleeper" the shop that did my work said I basically have a ZO6 with an automatic tranny.
I.E
LS6 heads and LS6 cam, LS6 oil pump, LS6 intake, 30# injectors, UD pulley, ported throttle body, new timing chain, plugs and wires, shortie headers.
Already had the Blackwing air filter, 160 Tstat, hi-flow cats, X-pipe and ZO6 Ti exhaust.
Had a street tune done all I need to do is have it dyno to see how much RWHP/RWT I have.
It is plenty fast for a daily driver and the engine is not compromised, it will pass somg test here in Cali without any problems.
Good luck,
Rsty

I will go with the P&P LS6 heads but what cam should I use? I don't want to be a ZO6 I would like a little more muscle I just don't want it to be too agressive..

Would I need to upgrade the intake manifold? If so should I go with the FAST intake?

There are mild cams out there that are not aggressive and will pass emissions. I would stick with the LS6 intake. UD pulley and a LS6 oil pump..new timing chain...valve springs..
Other will chime in with better info on cams and how to get what you want.

The TSP Stage 1 LS6 (243 castings) are a great deal. Those with a 224-224 112 cam and an LS6 intake manifold and you'll run by Z06's. A good speed density tune and it will feel like stock as you drive it around - except with a lot more RWHP.

A 224/224 LS114 would be a better chance of passing emissions if his state has a check for it.

BTW, you already have the LS6 intake if your car is 2001 or newer.

Just a thought- I would definitely take a pass on the Z06 cam and heads unless they are free... especially if you are paying for the install. For not much more $, you can get a "better" package that will give you more power but still pass emissions. Plenty of mild cams and cheap heads out there that will give you more power throughout the curve.

A TR224 on a 114 always gets brought up as one of the bigger, street cams that will still pass emissions. Plenty that are smaller too, but still have stock manners and make more power.

Not sure what supporting mods you have to let that cam breath, but a good set of headers is always recommended as well. There is a TR cam only that works well with the stock manifolds - it might be another option if $ is the limiting factor.

There is hours of reading on LS1 tech on heads and cam selection.
