now i know how a comedian feels when he tells a joke and no one laughs,........... kinda like that loving look you got when you bought your wife a washing machine for her birthday
Removing the screen was a popular mod awhile back. I bought and installed a Granatelli intake system. From the front scoop to the throttle body. I called Granatelli about the MAF because it was screened. The explanation I was given is the screen helps stabilize the air flow as it crosses the hot wire of the MAF. I can't tell you if this is true or not.
The screen itself is not that restrictive. It's there to straighten out the airflow before it gets to the wires. A descreened maf on a stock engine would prob yeild .5hp and require a bit of tuning. Not really worth the headache. A stock Z60 maf would require less tuning but still needs to be done for minimal gain. You could go with a Speed Density Tune and get rid of the Maf altogether.

i think speed density is a little radical in view of my minimal mods. if i picked up only 1 or 2 Hp with a Z06 maf that would be fine as long as i didn;t lose any drivability or lose HP.
The screen on the MAF smooths and straightens the flow of air coming into the sensor to minimize false airflow readings. On LS1 engines in vehicles with straight intakes like the C5 the screen isn't necessary. On trucks with the LS1 that have a side tube where the intake air comes at the MAF at an angle the screen is needed to smooth out the turbulance.
GM figured this out and removed the screen from the Z06 in '02.
My guess is there may be some cross model use of the same MAF sensor and therefore the screen is left in as a default.
Remove it or leave it, although if removing the screen is good for the Z06 it should be good for the other C5 siblings.

Supposedly, the MAF tables in the PCM on the Z are slightly different, to account for the missing screen.
unless you're going to change your intake manafold and do some other extensive mods the answer to your question is the minimal gains you'll see are not worth the expense. Leave your screen right where it is.
