Default Changing springs on Hurst

How do you change the springs on the Hurst?
After opening the alan bolts, is the spring right under there?
Does the metal cap go under the spring or over?
Can you buy the alan screw anywhere?

The springs are on the sides of the shifter under the retining screws.

NO springs are required (the factory shifter has none).

I recommend you remove the shift stops while your in there...

The Hurst shifter comes with shift stops located at the front and back of the shifter. No springs there but recommend you remove these as they are a source of rattling. The left to right shifter tension is controlled by springs under two large alan type screws located on the top of the shifter on the left and right. I recommend you purchase a set of alan wrenches as these are always handy. Most Hardware stores will carry them. The Hurst shifter instructions I have note a 1/4 hex key wrench is needed to remove the alan screws. The spring setup from the factory is a bit stiff for my likeing. I removed the factory springs and put in a single spring on either side. I used the second to weakest spring in mine. A lot of folks us the lightest spring setup. It is all to your own liking. Note - Be sure and use a dab of Loctite Blue on the threads when you put the alan screws back in. Do not tighten all the way down. You only want to tighten about 3.5 truns according to the instructions. Good luck with it.

Ok. I'm following you. When you open up those alan screws do you see the spring right below? In other words, does the spring sit directly against the bottom of the alan screw?? There is a small metal cap also inside the hole that articulates with the spring. I'm assuming the spring sits on top of that small metal washer(looks like a small watch battery but is metal). One side of this is flat the other side has a raised portion in the center. Can you see that below the spring when you remove it? Not sure if this cap sits in the hole with the raised portion up or down?
Are those alan screw standard size where I can buy at a local store?

Rob:

Just sent you a PM. I vaguely recall the pieces you are rerferring to that sit in these bias spring holes. I am almost positive these sit below the springs. The springs drop in on top of them and the alan screws screw down directly on top of the springs. You mention a raised portion on one side and a flat side on the other on the small metal washer at the bottom. I cannot recall which side goes up and the instructions do not mention this either. You might try installing one way on your workbench and move the shifter around. If you get any resistence of here the springs binding, pull the alan screws and turn the washer over. If I was a betting man, I would say the flat side goes down. If you get in a bind, call Hurst 's service department at 216-688-8300 x500 . Best of luck.
