Default 3:42 Diff.

Someone has the answer.
Why is the ZO6 3:42 better than the C5 3:42; is it because of stronger shafts?
Thanks,
SC5

no; not the shafts.

The Z06 gears are shot-peened to make them a little stronger.

I run with the non-Z06 3.42 in a 2002 A4:

remember that the manual tranny Z06 has one helluva torque factor due to it having (and being able to dump) a clutch. Unless you go with a full race high-stall TC with drag radials... the Z06 diff should be more that enough.

(but this is free advice )

No difference between the Z06 diff and the coupe diff. The trannys are different. The MN6 in the coupe and the MN12 in the Z. Not only are the mn12 gears a little stronger but they are also geared ALOT better than the mn6.

Gear LS1/MM6 LS6/M12
1st 2.66:1 2.97:1
2nd 1.78:1 2.07:1
3rd 1.30:1 1.43:1
4th 1.00:1 1.00:1
5th 0.74:1 0.84:1
6th 0.50:1 0.56:1

Ok, so that is why it's better to get a ZO6 3.42 over a C5 3.42 to use with the A4 tranny.
Thanks

I do believe that the Z06 ring and pinion are shot peened. Otherwise there is no difference.

As far as transmissions go, I don't think that the MN12 ratios are better for my car, I've got a 4:10 rear. It would make 1st gear very, very low. I can start out in 2nd gear now without a problem. Can you explain how a MN12 trans is stronger?

I was speaking in regards to an M12 with a 3.42. I currently have an MN6 with a 3.90 rear and it is AWESOME, and I agree that an M12 with a 4.10 is pretty crazy, but people have done it. On the M12 being stronger I dont know, I got my words mixed up, I know the gears on the Z06 REAR are shot peened, I dont know if the tranny is stronger.

Actually, if you look at the Tremac specs, T56s with 2.97 1st gears (like the M12), all other things be equal, have a lower torque capacity.
