Default * * * Regular Maintainance / Servicing Question ? * * *

Hey guys,

My car 99, A4 coupe is reaching 25K mile mark soon. I have already changed the tranny fluid & filter at 20K. I do regular oil changes with Mobile1 and K&N filter. Is there something I need to do at this point? I was considering Decarbonization, and change of spark plugs to NGK TR55's, and probably stay with factory wires for now, until I switch to MSD wires later. I'm having the rear diff changed to 3.42 and will add Redline oil in it.

Plz suggest what else I should do, or consider doing. Car doesn't get driven daily, but 3-4 times a weeks.

Thanks... I'll appreciate all suggestions and input...

Plugs & wires are good unless you break something. Even though the miles are low, the car is almost 7 years old. At this point I'd change out all the fluids: brake, coolant, diff (you've got that one scheduled).

If the tires are original check them carefully for sidewall cracking. Tires have a time limit on them regardless of wear (I found out the hard way on my boat trailer's tires at 70 mph! ).

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Hey Mike,

The Coolant has also been changed, forgot to mention. Also got a new battery. Tires will be changing soon, once I figure out if I'm gonna keep my Mag wheels or switch to C6 Z06 wheels, then I'll get the new tires also. I don't know how to change the brake fluid, someone had mentioned the speedbleeders, so I'll look into that (though not sure how to do it) Any other fluids, or anything else needs changing. Car IS AFTER ALL 7 yrs old. So, I guess I should leave the plugs as they are, not change em? I was under the impression the TR55's have a better spark, therefore better gas burning and some added performance.... Oh well.... I'm open to suggestions..

I would honestly stick to the AC Delco plugs. NGK's are good plugs, but there is no point in changing them if you're not modding the car. You will not see any improvement changing to the NGK's. The stock plugs/wires go a long time. I would also change the fuel filter and air filter.

Well, that's what I thought... If I'm gonna change to AC Delco plugs, I might as well let the originals sit in there. It has 25K miles on it, and should last longer than that. I did change the air filter to Blackwing . I'd love to change the fuel filter also, but I hear its inside the fuel tank. Too much work to get there..

Speedbleeders are not necessary. If you are familiar with bleeding a brake system, then flushing the fluid is just like a really serious bleed. Suck all the old fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir (I bought an old school battery fluid squeeze bulb at Autozone for $3), refill with fresh fluid, then bleed RR, LR, RF, LF until the fluid becomes clear. Do a search on bleeding and you'll get (what else) a 100 different ways to do it.

So, I guess I should leave the plugs as they are, not change em? I was under the impression the TR55's have a better spark, therefore better gas burning and some added performance....
I pulled my plugs at 100K miles, and they were in fine condition. Older AC Delco platinum plugs had problems with the platinum pucks coming loose, but that problem appears to be fixed. If your car isn't misfiring, I'd say leave 'em alone. If you DO change out the plugs, the TR-55s are a good plug. I don't think you'll see any performance difference or efficiency, but they work well. That's what I changed to, and 43K miles later they're working just fine.

One other thing I'd change at this point would be the fuel and air filters. They're probably OK, but it wouldn't hurt.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

The filter is not in the tank until late 2004 models w? FFS fuel system. Yours is outside the tank and easy to change.
