Default Degreeing the Cam

I'm considering doing the mods on my LS1 myself - Intake, Cam, Heads, etc. A couple of questions though... First, is it worth it to degree the cam? I done motorcycles with double overhead cams and it wasn't too bad. I just had to take my time. Second, does the motor have to come out to degree the cam?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Unless your installing an adjustable timing set, degreeing the cam is just comfirmation that that the cam your installing , is what the cam card says it it. Having said that, I installed a cam that must have been a custom grind. (I bought it new, but 2nd hand). Neither the markings on the cam or the card indicated it had any advance ground in, but when I installed it, it checked at +4* advanced. I haven't done it with the engine in the vehicle, but with one of the smaller degree wheels, it should be possible.

If you know the grind, most install dot to dot. I also didn't want a double chain and went with the Katech chain, not sure there is an adjustable set for a single.

"Dot to dot, is the same as "straight-up", right?

And why didn't you want a double chain, if I may ask?

I can't answer for vettenuts on the double, but Lou from LG runs a single in his race cars

I didn't want to get into the oil pump spacers and the oil tube is then out of alignment. Its difficult enough to get into place without this extra spacing without pinching the o-ring. With the Katech chain available, I didn't see the need. The Katech chain is what the C5R's ran without failure.
