I did some searching, but can't find anything that specifically addresses what I experienced. 99 FRC w/~19800 miles for reference.
I washed the car today, and was headed out after dark. I flipped the headlights on, the lights illuminated, but they didn't pop up. I got out of the car and tried flipping the switch a few more times. The lights never popped up and never made any grinding noise. I opened the hood and ran the lights up manually and headed on my way. I stopped at the gas station to get gas, and while I was out of the car with the key off I tried the lights again. To my surprise they popped right up. I tried them 3 or 4 times with the key off and they'd pop up every time. I get back in the car, start it up....headlights won't pop up. Turn the key off, flip the light switch, the lights pop up. Start the car and I'm on my way.
Anyone have any clue why the lights would only pop up with the key off? It seems to have cleared itself up for the time being, but I was wondering if anyone else had ever experienced this before.
It confusd me, too. I've only had the car for a little over a week, and they've worked flawlessly every other time I've had to use them. When it happened last night, at first I couldn't figure out why I couldn't see the road (I'm a moron, I know). It was only then that I noticed that the lights were on and the headlights hadn't popped up.
...then I discovered the odd game they wanted to play with me.
I've had it the other way around on shut down. With the key in and engine running the lights stayed up and on despite the switch going off. Once the car was shut down they closed normally.
I'm still in the dark (forgive the pun) on why
BTW I have DRLs inhibited and twilight sentinel off.
