DTC Code- P0171- Fuel Trim System Lean??

I recently purchased a H/C car and every once and a while the check engine light will come on becuase of a P0171 code. Eventually it goes off by itself too but it sometimes takes a long time. Im just curious as to what exactly "Fuel Trim System Lean" means....or where it's measured? Throughout the RPM's?, at WOT?, etc??

Clean your MAF and check for air leaks before the throttle body. If all OK, you may need to get the MAF calibration table checked by a tuner.

Is it the stock MAF ? Aftermarket, particularly the Grannatelli MAF is a waste......been there, done that...always throwing lean codes, went back to stock.
