How far to push front spring when lowering?

How far to push front spring when lowering?
I tried to do the lowering procedure, but was unable to move the 10mm studs. I pressed up on the spring about a half inch, but was afraid to push any more than that. This was done about a foot away from the joint. Does anyone know how far I can go with the spring without damaging it?

If you are seeing noticeable deflection, I think you've gone far enough. You might have better results by using a jack with a smaller surface area that will allow you to tuck into the A-arm, closer to the bolt. In any event, make sure you are outboard of the spring shackle (as below).

thanks for the tips. I did add regular motor oil to the threads, but very small amount. Penetrating oil contains solvents which could affect the plastic in the spring. I'll give it another try.
