Valve train noise CAN be from the improper preload on the lifters.
There is differant kinds of valve train noise
I installed AFR 205 heads milled .040 with a LG G5-X3 cam with comp 921 springs and Comp R lifters and 7.400 comp push tubes.
When hot the engine actualy sounded like it had a solid lifter cam in it at idle and when you reved it up past 2400 rpm you could hear the clicking go away ( from inside, outside it sounded bad *** from the headers) I read a few threads here and there and then talked to tech head at Comp and he said that the Comp lifter were very picky with the preload. I though I needed longer tubes but in fast I needed shorter tubes. The lifters were preloaded to much (.015) after checking the correct way and the plunger inside was not high enough in the lifter housing to shut off a passage and it was letting oil bypass and not pumping up all the way at idle. When reved up the oil psi overcame that oil lose and they would pump up. I am talking .015, I just could believe that therory. I drove the car around for 4000 miles listening to the slight click click at idle and at cruise rpm 1700-1800 coming from
under the dash.
Then I built a 402 stroker out of a LS2 block and used the exact same , lifters, rockers, push tubes BUT I used a LG G5-X4 cam and AFR 225 heads not milled.
When I fired it up the first time I had NO overhead noise AT ALL.
NONE, I WAS AMAZED!!
What I learned out of this was that the extra height due to not milling the heads using the same 7.400 push tubes backed up Comp's theory.
that I had preloaded the lifters TOO much and I should have used SHORTER push tubes on the milled 205 heads not longer ones to get rid of the click.
They make a tool and a method to get the geometry of the rocker and preload correct USE IT.

Comp R's are very difficult to get correct, their preload requirements have a very narrow tolerance. But you are correct, most people just throw them together, no measurements.

I'd say a good tune would be in order. I make just about the same with cam only, and have no valve train noise.

Is it just me or does this sound really low to anyone else.

AFR 205 Heads
224-228 with 581 lift and 112 LSA
80MM BBK TB
LS6 Intake mani
Dynamax headers w/ high flow cats
B&B RT 66 exhaust
3.90 gears
Blackwing intake
smooth couper and Z06 air bridge
If its a manual then the numbers are a little low. If it is an auto then those numbers are right on.
