Default no start, was running fine

ive read most of the no start problem on this forum, and check all of the basics and others things mentioned in this forum

97 vette ,automatic
car was running fine, came out after a movie and it would not start ( no turning of the engin) lites and every thing fine no clickin from the starter, but the interior lites flickin on an off and a clickin from the passinger side floor then the interior lites go out and the clickin stops, tried to start it by givin power to the starter solenoid, engine spins but it will not run, went back to the clickin noise on th passenger side floor, and unpluged the middle plugg from the silver box ( i think thats the bcm) and wait about 10 min, and plug it back in it will start but the clickin will start again and car will shut down after about a min or less, no codes but ive dissconnected the batt a number of times, but after it runs then shuts down no codes

one other thing, it will say reduced engin power on the display screen

please sombody help me!!!

samething is happening to me. But I have a 6 speed. Some guys says it the starter or the key. They also told me to clean the key chip thing and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Or it could be the key it self, they wear out. Well did all that and nothing worked. So today I pulled the starter off and going to get it checked and if bad replacing it. Hopefully that will fix my problem. When it wouldnt crank I shook the wires coming off the starter and then it cranked right up. weird, But they were tight on the starter. So im not sure. If this fixes the problem i'll let you know. Good Luck!

checked all the fuses, battery stayed above 11 volts under load test and its less than a year old, if i give the starter power with a jumper wire, the engin will crank over it just will not run, but like i said b4 if i disconnect the middle plug from the silver box on the passenger side for 10 min or so and plug it back in, it will start rite up, but shut down after about 30 sec to a min , we have used different keys but i will try to clean them, today im goin just goin to recheck everything

thanks

Sounds like classic dead battery syndrome

Those are the exact symptoms I had when my AC Delco went South. One Red Top later and problem solved.

If its an AC Delco I'd be finding a replacement.

The Password code means the BCM is not sending the correct Fuel enable codeword to the PCM. The Key code means the BCM is not able to read the correct VATS resistor value from the ignition key. Problem is either :
1) Resistor pellet in the key is bad
2) Contacts in the ignition lock cylinder which engage the key pellet contacts are bad/bent/dirty
3) The two wires from the lock cylinder contacts to the BCM are open or shorted.

If the BCM does not read the correct resistor value, the starter will not engage (the starter relsy above the BCM is not energized), AND the BCM will not send the correct fuel enable code to the PCM, over the serial communication bus.

This is what happen to me. and I fixed it. he was right! Try this and see if it works

"I had this exact same issue about a year ago. I ended up buying a new iginition cylinder and had it cut to match my keys. I installed it, and it worked perfectly until a week ago when I started getting the same codes again and it even kept the car from starting. So, I removed the lock cylinder to inspect and noticed that the tiny little wire that attaches to the cylinder had broken. This is the wire that feeds the BCM with a signal to tell it if the key resistor is the correct one to complete the circuit. So, I cut off the bad wire and reattached it and also reinforced the wire with hot glue to keep it from bending when the ignition switch it turned on and off. It fixed the problem, at least so far! Bottom line, either buy another new ignition cylinder, or remove this one and inspect the wire for breakage."

Disconnecting the battery does NOTHING to clear codes. The PCM uses non-volatile memory to store DTC and other information. You could disconnect the battery for a year and the only thing you'll erase is radio settings and a other non-PCM memory items. The PCM will power back up with everything still in memory.

If you have no codes set (seems hard to believe if you're getting a "reduced engine power" message), then you have a power supply problem.

Either

1) Bad battery (unlikely based on your description that the engine starts - runs a short while - shuts down)

2) Bad connection to battery (clean the battery posts and cable ends with wire brush or other abrasive to get bare shining metal exposed on the posts and inside of the connectors)

3) Bad ground connection (see sticky posted by Bill Curlee on electrical issues in a C5)

Almost anything else will post a DTC such as a P1631 (bad password between BCM and PCM) that should help pinpoint the problem.
