I have 3.90's in my ride. With the car on a lift and the wheels hanging if I try to rotate the wheels in either direction there is play. Also there is clanging of the gears that are hitting each other in there. Is this normal if the wheels are not on the ground. I am getting a metallic rubbing noise when driving over bumps. Just trying to determine if this could be the cause. Thanks.

Yes, the play from forward to reverse in the diff is normal, as well as the "thump" transitioning between forward to reverse with the wheels off the ground.
I don't believe your rubbing sounds over bumps are related to the diff; check for loose anti-sway bar end links, etc.
