that's very possible.

I'm sure it could be re-ground... but at what cost? Probably near the cost of a brand new one ???

I would NOT use that cam. Looking at it closely, it looks like the rust has done its job.

I'm surprised that a forum member would sell that cam to anyone - let alone another forum member. You should return the cam for your money back. If that can't be resolved then you should post his/her name in the Parts For Sale section so the group can avoid this person for future business. When I sell my used cams I always email a close up picture to show the buyer its condition, etc., which is nothing less than excellent - or you don't sell it. I'm sure the forum member will do the right thing.

Talked to the seller today. He called me and said he saw the pictures, and was very apologetic, and said he doesn't know how it got that way, but he'd gladly refund my money to me on friday when he gets paid. So until then...

I'm not sure what I'm more confused about :

1) that the seller actually DOESN'T know how the cam magically rusted

or

2) That the buyer would actually consider using the cam in this condition

You were kidding right?........you weren't really considering using this cam in your engine? .............right?
I guess I kept reading waiting for the punchline.

1) noone knows how the cam got like it did when i recieved it.

2) i didn't know if someone thought it might be able to be polished out or not, i've never had to deal with a rusted cam, i've always bought new ones, and it looks like i'll continue.

Im the one who sold him the cam.The cam came out of my car last month and the ******* technician who took it out never oiled it down after he took it out.So that being said i had left it in the back of my car for a couple days and it got kinda cold and never thought about taking it out and i posted it for sale not knowing it was like that cause it was still in the box. That being said i am refunding him in full it was an honest mistake on my part and next time this wont happen again. Now 5W0P3 i didnt send you the money back yet only cause this weekend was a nightmare for me but i will get it to you before the end of the week i promise im not looking to screw you over.Money has just been a little tight for me but.The end of the this weekend for sure.

Default Not accusing or defending anyone!

I can tell you this much the past two summers here in Indiana have been so humid. (SO HOW HUMID WAS IT?) Items on my office desk in my pole building have rusted just sitting there. The Company I work for makes items for the tool and die industry and we have had to spray everything un-coated or un-painted with an anti-rust oil. Surface rust can turn into pitted rust very quickly. Anything with a fine machined or ground surface needs to be coated in WD-40 or similar product and wrapped in paper or plastic. The paper or plastic is not there to keep mositure off but to keep the WD-40 in place.

An application of motor oil works the same to prevent rust correct?
