It has absolutely nothing to do with your gas mileage.
The air pump is strictly for emissions purposes on cold start ups. If i'm not mistaken, its only on for the first 4 minutes of startup.
Its a total waste. I had mine completely ripped out.

Did that with a few codes that came up after the H/C that we emissions related..
