Default Breaking Crank Nut Loose

I am in the beginnings of a heads and cam swap and am just about down to the part where you need to remove the crankshaft nut if you want to get the pulley, oil pump, etc off. Question - how do you keep the crankshaft from rotating while pulling on the wrench to break the nut loose? I have a 6-speed manual.

What I did in my Z28 M6, prior to the Corvette, was to put it into 6th gear and block the rear tires. I figured that the motor would put out more torque than I could, and if the trans could tolerate the torque in 6th that the motor could put out, it would handle the torque I could do. The bottom line is that it worked... 6th gear, wheels blocked, and I was able to remove the crank bolt. Same thing for installation.

Thanks

That's what I did as well, plus emergency brake although I don't think that helped much. Good luck with the install

I have used 5th gear usually but obviously 6th works as well. I use my heavy-duty jack handle to give me good leverage. The more leveage you have, the less chance of losing control of the release and the safer. Take your time and even have a friend help with this portion and the upcoming torqueing procedure when you install your new pulley bolt.

Safety first and always.

Well, I glad to hear this. I've spent two weeks and two unsuccessful ebay attempts at trying to buy a Kent-Moore J-42386 LS1 flywheel holding tool. By the way, who does just sell these Kent Moore tools anyway???

I used an 18" pipe wrench on the old pulley. Bind it against the frame and loosen the bolt. Everyone hold your breath now... I used it to install my brand new Powerbond UD pulley. I wrapped the jaws on the pipe wrench with lots of rags and applied steady pressure to remove the bolt. I'll challenge anyone to find marks on the new pulley from the pipe wrench.

I popped mine loose with an impact wrench, no drama.
