Default Hurst Shifter

Ok, Installed a hurst today in my O3 coupe. Install was rather painless...... Here's the question..........WHY IS IT SO LOUD??????

I pulled it all apart, then took the damn shifter apart just to make sure all was good. I like the shifting, the shift sound does not bother me but the engine/trans noise i hear in the cabin is insaine. Very hard to get into reverse.

1. Just mine or is Hurst just a loud set up?

2. Why do I have to push so darn hard to get into reverse?

I read all the comments and threads, etc. But it just seemed like it was personal preference. never would I think that It would be like this. Any suggestions??????

How did you install the rubber boot around the base of the shifter?
I trimmed mine so it was a tight fit, and I have no noticeable noise from the tunnel.

As far as going into gear, make sure you have the shifter stops adjusted with enough clearance to get full engagement in each gear before it hits the stops. I made sure my shifter was fully in each gear then adjusted the stops so I could still see light between the stop and the shifter stick.

Don't forget, though, that when you get a shifter without all the rubber crap like in the stock shifter there will be more noise transmission through the more solid linkage.

I installed my Hurst shifter about 6 months ago and no longer like it. Too hard to shift, particularly in reverse. I don't think you can do much about that. About the noise, I tried several things without much success until I came up with the idea of a rubber cup on the lever resting on the top of the adjustment screws (those with the side-to-side lever). it works quite well.

Good luck

Are you talking about the Hurst rattle? There are many things you can do to quiet this. But the first thing you have to remember is that the Hurst is a performance shifter and not a dampened OEM shifter. So it wasn't designed to be quiet, it was designed as a precision shifter for racing.

When I had the Hurst shifter in my car, I also had a lot of noise coming up through the console area. So I went and bought the Hurst rubber shift boot, super-glued that to the C5 lower boot and that took care of that problem handily. Kind of a kluge, but with the Hurst boot snugly around the shaft of the shifter, it elimnated nearly all of the noise.

But I hated the hard lateral movements of the shifter as well as others. And I found out that you really can't just remove those springs. Look at that picture in this thread. See those set screws on top? They are just barely in the base of the shifter by maybe a thread or two. I was worried to death they would just pop out some day.

Went with the MTI shifter and it is MUCH better. However, I am having trouble getting them to send me the core charge refund after I sent them my stock C5 shifter, so don't know what is going on there with them. So far my emails have just been ignored.

I had the Hurst shifter in my '02 for only a week and decided it was not for me, had one in my C-4 and it was perfect. I did not have a problem with noise though. I used a 1 1/2 inch plastic pipe cap over the shifter and into the stock boot. There is a tech tip on here somewhere about it. That really quiets things down. That said, I still switched to the MTI. IMHO it is much better for regular driving. I had no trouble getting my credit from MTI, I would guess they are just backlogged. I would keep calling them though, never know when there is a SNAFU with anybody.

The correct shifter **** goes a long way in noise reduction caused by the Hurst rattle, which is a harmonic vibration of the drive shaft. This vibration travels up the shifter shaft and out most shifter *****. The **** acts like a speaker amplifying the rattle. A heavy billet **** reduces the rattle. I got an MGW **** and it worked wonders.

In addition, you can also use electrical tape on the shifter shaft threads, where the **** screws on.

If you don't have a heavy billet **** you can use lead stick on wheel weights wrapped around the base of the shifter shaft to absorb the rattle.

Rubber pipe caps placed over the shifter base are used mostly for noise other than the Hurst rattle.

If all this is to much for you then maybe a short throw C6 shifter is more what you need. They bolt right in.

Love my MTI as well. If the Hurst continues to disappoint you, you may want to give it a try.

Rich Z, a phone call will get you a much quicker response. Good luck.

Don't feel bad. I bought Borla Stingers back in 2004 because at that time everyone said how nice they sound with no resonance. They had so much resonance I could not talk while cruising at 70 in 6th gear. It's the same with some of these after market shifters. It is amazing how one man's "just right" is another's "I can't stand it". I took the Stingers off and replaced them with MagnaFlows. They don't sound as good around town but cruising is now nice. Just shows how different we all are.

Andy and the boys did put alot smaller pully on it. It pegs 10 PSI quick they had some problem getting it to make power on the dyno. We threw some Comp 918 springs and a kenneybell Boost A Pump along with the high out- put fuel pump they installed. Charile tuned it a bit rich to cool the cylnders now its insane to drive.

Have had Hurst for over a year and love it, altho wife does not feel same way.

1. I took the rubber boot and installed upside down. No sound.
2. Reverse is definitely harder. I put into third gear first and then it just slips into R.

If you installed a Hurst ****, go back to the stock. Its much more comfortable.

My buddy installed the B&M Ripper in his C5 and I must admit its pretty nice. Less notchy. But I think my Hurst is more precise.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I took a l rather long cruise today and did highway and city driving... traffic, no traffic. agressive driving and easy going................
Putting the noise aside for a minute the results are in......

Hurst has GOT TO COME OUT!

the only thing this shifter is good for is racing....period. It has a perfect shift pattern very tight and very accurate. However for my needs...... I am going to look for another.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

And you didn't know this when you bought the Hurst? Why else would anyone buy a Hurst performance shifter?

You might want to try the C6 shifter. I replaced mine with it and it is shorter and the **** has a much nicer feel then the stock C5. The throw is a little shorter also.
