hi guys, I'm doing a cam install soon and I was wondering exactly what I would need to do it all.
Cam specs are 224/230 w/ .281/.592 lift and a 114lsa+2
I want to do this cheep as I can. I figured I would need some valve springs. I don't plan on doing the oil pump or any of that stuff, pretty much drop in. What do all you guys suggest. Can I do this without a compressor?
This is for a 98' auto coupe.
BTW if anyone one south eastern NC ( Fayetteville area/ Ft. Bragg) wants to help, let me know.
I would strongly suggest you update your oil pump to the LS6 version (GM stock is fine) since the earlier oil pumps were prone to failure. Since it will be out of the car it is a perfect time. Valve springs are a must with that cam. You will also need hardened pushrods and a new timing chain, the LS2 is fine and is about $30. A new front harmonic balancer should also be installed since they are a pain to get to and yours is got some age/miles on it. Comp 918 valve springs with Comp steel retainers. Here is my list:
LS2 timing chain
LS6 oil pump
Timing cover gasket
Front seal
Harmonic Balancer
Hardened pushrods
Rods for holding lifters or magnets
Valve cover gaskets
2 Gallons Dexcool
2 Gallons distilled water
Power Steering fluid
New power steering line o-rings (cheap)
Vaccum caps to cap off power steering lines while off the car
Loctite
RTV Silicone
3 oil pump o-rings (in case you pinch one, these are cheap insurance)
Good torque wrench
Suggested:
Redline assembly lube (dissolves instantly in oil, contains no solids)
Valve spring micrometer to measure installed height
Adjustable pushrod or micrometer to measure base circle to compute new pushrod length required
great post, i'll have to start gathering all the little goodies. Anyone suggest the best place to go or can i grab all the easy stuff at like autozone.
I got my gaskets at Fred Beans. One note on loctite, if you look at the end of the tube that is sealed (not the dispensing end) you will see a code. The first letter is the month and the second the year of manufacture. Don't buy any more than six months old.

you do know that stock LS1 oil pumps are prone to failure right? 160.00 for a ported ls6 pump is cheap insuranc that you wont lose your motor for a failed pump. since your gonna make more power, you might as well strenghten anything that you need to remove to do the job like the timing chain...eliminate all the weak links. just food for thought...

early ls1 pumps are prone to failure. They were redesigned in i believe 99 or 00.
If you wanna do as little as possible... new waterpump gaskets (unless you have the metal ones) timecover gasket, Fresh oil to over cam with, new harmonic balancer bolt.. all of this is less than $40 together.
and springs that can handle the lift. a cam that small, you could probably use teh yellow Z06 springs that cna be foudn on the board or ebay fairly cheap.
Tools..
harmonic balancer puller
Socket set
Tq wrench that can do 15lbs and 150lbs i believe (off the top of my head sorry)
Spring compressor tool
Air compressor, with sparkplug adapter.
If you think your lucking you can just spin your old cam a couple of times and hope the lifters stick in place while you install new one.. otherwise there are some tools to lock in the lifters. Drop a lifter and you will be really happy.
thanks everyone, I'm pricing out a ported ls6 pump right now. thunder has em for 150 and Texas speed has em for 139. I may go Texas Speed b/c they have a gasket kit that is half the price of Thunder. Not that I'm bashing thunder, I believe they just have more to their kit that I'm not interested in. Both are great shops!
