Simple question: With headers my valvetrain noise is, of course, much more noticeable. Will header wrap reduce that noise?

Please save your 'header wrap will destroy your headers' talk. I don't care. LG already reduced the price of their ill-fitting system by $400 since I bought it, so I don't care. If anything, destroyed headers will give me a reason to buy a neew set of kooks.

Anyone that has wrapped their headers, did the noise go down???

 

You need to look into getting one of those insulation kits (sound deadning) from one of the supporting vendors or else where.

Wrap will keep the heat in, won't due much to quiet down the interior noise levels.

 

At best it would reduce the highest of frequencies. Overall it will not make much difference. I too suggest a sound-deadening project.

 

Why are you getting more valvetrain noise? I didn't have this issue when I installed my headers. Is this a common problem?

 

From what I have heard it is pretty common. It is simply due to the fact that the headers have such a thin wall (I was actually surprised how thin) whereas the stockers are thick walled iron. A few guys have mentioned wanting to put header wrap on their GTO's and Firebird's because they heard it helps the noise. Neither have done it yet, and I wanted some input from someone who actually knows (has heard a difference, not just someone who doesn't think it will work) before I drop $100 on a roll of 2" wrap.

I say 'valvetrain noise' but I imagine the majority of the sound actually comes from combustion itself.

 

Just used header wrap on wifes 1973 - solely for cockpit over-heating issues. But it did reduce the tinny tapping noises of the engine. Not a helluva lot... but enough to notice.

A good reason to NOT wrap your headers; it creates excessive tube wall temperatures, ultimately shortening the live of the tubes.

You may not realize it, but every time hot exhaust gases flow through the header tubes, microscopic particles of the steel are released into the exhaust stream. The higher the temperature, the higher rate of material loss.

Wrapping the header tubes (closer to the head the more dramatic the effects of course) will accelerate and thin the tubes prematurely.

Stainless is more durable than mild steel, but if you plan on keeping the car for the next several years, I would not recommend wrapping the headers.

The point was more that he doesnt care about the effects to the header. Not wheter or not you were right.

 

Oh, I understood; don't feel obligated to defend posts like "great you just wasted all of our time with your nonsense."

 

Wrap will eat at the headers! The wrap will not make a big difference if any at all! I tried it when I had my '90 and it didn't give me any good results!

If header wrap won´t quite down the valvetrain noise is there anything else one could do ? There has got to be something ? I can´t belive all you guys with headers are dealing with these increased valvetrain noises...
Do some headers have thicker tube walls than others ?
I´d love to install headers on my Z06 but definitely won´t deal with the valvetrain noise again... I remember this back from my fbody days and really hated that noise caused by the thin walls of the tubes....

 

Also interested in if this is common to all headers. How bad is it from inside the car? I haven't seen many complaints.
