Default crane roller rockers

Has anyone installed crane roller 1.8s on an early ls1. I am considering this upgrade & was wondering how these wuod compare to shaft mounted rockers?

I have the Cranes (now 1.7, previously 1.8) on my 02. With the earlier heads (perimeter bolt) you will need to take off a little material so they don't hit. You will also need to upgrade your springs, use either the Crane 833's or the Comp 918's. I think with the stock timing chain, I would opt for the Comp's because the 833's are pretty stout springs and not required on the stock cam.

I have used the 1.8 on my early H/C package and the 1.7 on the stroker and am using them on my new 402--on the vinci website there dyno graphs however show an almost 20rwhp increase using cranes new shaft mounted 1.7s but I noticed the graph was much smoother and the power band was extended from a peak around 6200 to about 6800 it must eliminate a lot of play in the valve train or something, thinking about pulling my 1.7s and replacing them with the shaft mounted however I will have to pull and machine the afr heads somewhat and get a spacer or higher valve covers as well and probably retune and the shaft mounted are not real cheap so dont know if its worth it--

thanks for the response guys. The add I read seemed to indicate no clearance problems. I had crane roller tips on my 76coupe, which actually had a four bolt 72 350 vette block. The difference was significant and the motor ran much smoother & seemed to rev faster than with the stock rockers. I thought they would be a good match on an ls1, which has a good deal of valvetrain noise in stock configuration. I guess the mod would be worth it at around 750 bucks, as long as the heads dont need to come off for machining. Right now my motor is basically stock, with a dyno tune & air box317RWHP before the Billy Boats, so I figure at present to be around 330RWHP. I wonder if it is worth it. any further suggestions are welcomed

Neptunebill,

Tony Mamo has been running these as well. I had just installed my heads when they came out, so I didn't switch.

RPF97,

I think the mods to make them fit are minor, and don't require head removal. Just a dremel and a sanding roll. I think the instructions on Cranes web site shows you where they need to be clearanced. The mods are slight, not major.

I will have to talk to tony about it we seem to be reaching peak hp at no more than 6200 I was thinking it should peak more in the 6600 range I have seen a set of the shaft rockers and they are beauts for sure---I am thinking 7350 push rods according to Joe Vinci we will see shortly if that helps but the shaft mounted are deff good for more power I am told you need a spacer for the valve covers for a little more clearance as well with the shaft mounts, no probs with the gold set--thanks

Occasionally on the 97-98s, you have to clearance the valve covers. We have only had to clearance 2. The instructions come with a diagram for the perimeter bolt valve covers in case clearancing is needed. It shows you where and how much is needed.
