99% of the time it's the switch in the transmission. They are prone to failure, it's less than 10 dollars at you local auto parts store.
All you need is the appropriate socket and some ramps (or a jack and jack stands) to put the rear of the car on.
If the lights still don’t function after the switch replacement; when the switch fails sometimes it blows the associated fuse, which is no big deal to replace of course.
Check both the switch and the fuse. In my case the switch failed and shorted to ground taking the fuse with it.
The switch is on the passenger side of the tranny about half way up the housing and closer to the front of the tranny. There's a wiring harness coming out of it. Unplug the harness and unscrew the switch with a wrench. The fuse is in the passenger footwell fuse block #21. The switch is about $10-15.
The Approach Light feature is on a separate circuit so they will work when you hit unlock the doors.
