Default Reverse Lights not functional

I noticed last night that my reverse lights do not light up when I back up the Vette. However, it lights up when I unlock the car and stays on.

What gives?

I had the sane exact problem with my 99 Vette. I ended up needing a new reverse light switch. Cost me about $ 170 to replace.

Ahh, this must be nostalgia night (see the "my turn signals work intermittently" post).

99% of the time it's the switch in the transmission. They are prone to failure, it's less than 10 dollars at you local auto parts store.

All you need is the appropriate socket and some ramps (or a jack and jack stands) to put the rear of the car on.

If the lights still don’t function after the switch replacement; when the switch fails sometimes it blows the associated fuse, which is no big deal to replace of course.

I might go the other way and check the fuse first, then the reverse switch. Also the wires or plug going to the switch on the tranny may be damaged.

Where is the switch located at? how about the fuse?

If I can locate the switch, I may be able to get a part number for it and buy a new one.

Thanks in advance.

The switch is on the tranny - here's a few (there are many) threads on the subject.

Check both the switch and the fuse. In my case the switch failed and shorted to ground taking the fuse with it.

The switch is on the passenger side of the tranny about half way up the housing and closer to the front of the tranny. There's a wiring harness coming out of it. Unplug the harness and unscrew the switch with a wrench. The fuse is in the passenger footwell fuse block #21. The switch is about $10-15.

The Approach Light feature is on a separate circuit so they will work when you hit unlock the doors.

Finally, an answer to the reverse light fuse location.
