today, my tranny stopped working. i got it towed home and noticed a puddle of tranny fluid and the right underside of the car was slathered in tranny fluid.
so i jacked up the rear of the car to check for a leaky line or something simple (hopefully) and found that the servo cover was cocked.
i called a local hi-perf tranny shop and they said that they have seen about 4 or 5 700's do this. mainly trannies that have shift kits and the spring ring isnt strong enough to hold the cover in.
i pulled the cover all the way off and nothing seems damaged, so im going to get another seal and a stiffer retaining ring and see if that works.
anyone else have this happen???
I have seen it a few times. The snap ring fits in a groove to retain the cover. The steel groove reacts with the aluminum cover over time. This corrodes both the ring and groove. If the ring is sanded completely smooth, I then use the tip of a cottor pin extractor to pick the groove completely clean. This can take 15 or 20 minutes to get smooth. Then, the clip will have a better channel to sit in. Long story shot, it is often human error that causes it.
Been there done that!! When we installed a shift kit into ENGLANDGREENS car, the snap ring wasnt fully seated in the grove! POW!!!!!!! stranded!!!
It takes LOTS of patients, the use of an inspection miror, a jood light, skinney hands, lots of bandages and you will get it to stay in! Inspect it a couple of times and make sure that it is FULLY seated.
yeah, i was going crazy trying to get the snap ring back in!! i am going to have a 'smaller' buddy come by (the same buddy i bought the car from!) and see if he can get in there a little easier than me. i am just hoping that we won't have to drop the exhaust to do it.
was the tranny okay after popping that off......didn't burn up the clutches after running low on fluid?? when this happened, i was only going about 10 mph and only drove about 200 yards (had to pull over out of the way of traffic) before i pulled over to wait for the flatbed.
