Default Muffler bypass tube

I have my driver side muffler out to repair a broken flange weld. I have read where others have installed a a bypass tube between the inlet and outlet pipe of the muffler. I plan to this to my mufflers tomorrow. I want to pick up about 2' of tailpipe on the way home from work this afternoon. What size pipe did you install and how do you like them? I don't want them so loud that I can't hear myself think. I just want a little rumble out of the LS1 when I give it the gas. I can do my own fabricating and welding. What do ya'll think?

I'd put the muffler and pipe back on a tack it in place first to make sure everything lined up.
Installing the a bypass pipe is what's called the A&A Mod. for the Forum Vendor who first introduced it and a piece of 1 3/4" or 2" SS pipe will work. I had it done awhile back and it gives a deeper sound, but you'll probably be looking for something more later.

I did this to hold me over until I decided on my final exhaust system.

This mod gives you two very different sounds, from inside and out.

From inside, it's a good amount louder. A little higher octave than aftermarket exhausts, and fairly loud. No resonance or drone of course. I'd give the inside sound a B+, definitely an improvement.

From the outside; however...

The right word for the sound it makes at low rpm/idle would be 'embarrassing.'

It almost sounds like a diesel truck, sped up a little, and higher octave. In fact, it sounds very much like a tractor. Not the exhaust note of a tractor, but the engine sound, if that makes sense. The sound as if you were standing next to the engine.

Revved up, it sounds like stock but louder.

I wish I had a chance to record it before I tossed it for my Corsa TIs.

Let me tell you a short story. Right after getting it done, I took it to a friend's house because I wanted him to rev it up so I could hear it outside.

As I pulled up, he said "There's something wrong with your car!" And every chance he's had, he's ripped me on the sound it made since.

Default Love the sound

Did the muffler by-pass a few weeks back and love the sound. Not to loud, so you can have a conversation in the cabin and a nice tone a rev. or WOT. Broke out the blow torch and welding machine, and had a few hours of quality time with my baby. It is a cheap mod. with good results IMHO.

I intended to do this one as well, but it's a bit of a challenge w/ my Ti pipes. Do you agree with the idle quality described above?

I'm thinking maybe if you didn’t make a smooth hole or made the hole smaller in diameter than the tube, you might end up with the negative results on idle. Could you post a short video or could clip so we can hear it at idle and revving?

I can host it for you, just email it to me. Thanks!

Mine was less than 2", not sure exact diameter. It was smaller than the rest of the pipes though.

I did just think of one difference, my car is an 04 and therefore has precats, though I'm not sure those little cats would make that difference.

Dan, I like the quality of the sound at idle, no tractor sound here, I live in Louisiana I know what a tractor sound like. I tried three different muffler system on my C4, waste of $$$, could not get the right tone for my taste . Did not want to do the same on the C5, with changing the exhaust system mulitple times. I want something to sound more aggressive than my wife Mercedes and her Expedition. I will try to post the sound clip this weekend.

Thanks very much, I'm sure it will benefit the CF membership.
