Coming back from the Nopi event in Atlanta the last weekend made me wonder if my car has overheat problems. The reason I have not noticed is b/c I have not sat in stop n go traffic for an hour or longer.

Outside temp was about 80 degrees. Sitting in traffic after about 20 or 30 minutes I noticed my temp was around 230 degrees. When I could get up to 30+ mph the temp would go down to about 210 or less. Is this normal? My car is stock minus exhaust and filter.

It seems like more of a fan problem than a lower degree thermostat b/c once I was moving my temp went down.

Any help???

I significantly lowered my temps. by going with a tstat/fan control combo from Nate at Xtreme. The fan kicks on at 172. My coolant temps rarely go over 185 in normal driving and in stop and go/hard driving usually no more than 199. Hope this helps. :yesnod:

 

If you notice the red line on the temp is above 230 F . if your stuck in traffic bumper to bumper.. there is very little cooling from your air intake, which is about 6 in off the ground... even with 80 temps.. the road surface gets up to 120 F.. I lazer tested road temps at 95 F... black top can get to 160 degrees.. cement surface 140 F. There is very little cooling from temps like this.. a fan controller will help.. a lower thermostat will help but it will not help by itself..

 

You might want to check to see if you have some trash that has blown up in between the shroud and the radiator. When I changed to a ram air setup, I had to change the shroud. I found a bunch of trash at the top of the radiator. Enough for a bird to have a nest.

 

Ditto on the junk accumilated on the radiator!
This is something everyone should look at.

If your in traffic ...turn on your A/C and it will kick the fans on and keep your Coolant Temps. around 210..... I see temps of 172 on the freeway and 180 in traffic with my mods...

 

Thanks guys, I did notice with the AC on the temp would drop. But it's kind of an oxymoron with the top down and AC on...

Oh well, I guess it didn't hurt to think I was overheating. Alteast that kept me from the temptation of racing all of those rice-burners on the way home from the NOPI event. ;)

Ditto what Viprklr said. The unit does a good job of keeping temps lower. One drawback that I see though is that it increases the duty cycle of the fans and therefore will probably shorten their lifespan somewhat. Also, I haven't had this mod installed over the winter months yet. I'll be keeping a close eye on this. Don't want too much of a good thing!

 

230 is normal. Don't worry.

Sure did! I think you may have walked off when I saw it. I was with my friends 300zx TT, which was right across from you. Definately liked your setup!

Actually I parked outside. I didn't even think about entering my car in there until it was too late. I honestly thought it was more of a foreign car event. Go figure...
