I am seriously considering a gear upgrade.I have a 2000w6spd.I currently have 3.42.I have found 2 shops that will do the work a local dealer that sponsors our club will do it for 1300.00 if i supply the gears.A local speed shop will do it for 1600.00 with his own gears do these prices sound reasonable? My dilema is will i really feel the diff. from 3.42 to 3.90? or should i go 4.10 but i heard this was more of a race gear. i wanna get the most out of this mod but i do drive the car daily(most of the year). With a 6speed i figure the 4.10's might be ok but im not sure. will these gears dramatically decrease my top speeds?
does anyone have experience with both gears?
any help will be appreciated.
3.90's are very nice. I have had 3.42's, 3.73's, and 4.30's and I like the 3.90's the best with around 500rwhp. If you are going to keep it more tame you could get the 4.10's and be very happy though.
$1300+gears and $1600 inclusive are pretty much the same thing, I would go with whomever you trust more to stand behind their work. Leaky diffs and failed gears due to improper installation are nothing you want to have to argue over. I don't think either is a great price, but it's not too bad. $1300 inclusive when I had mine done at ECS.
I have the 4.10s and for the street they are great, a little too much at the strip, maybe. I do miss having some more MPH at the top of third gear, but overall I can't complain. If I had to do it over again, I would probably go with 3.90s. I think with either you will get an immediate boost in the butt-o-meter and a big poo-eating grin on your face. Just try not to hit it until it is broken in and you change the fluids again.
If you were close I would offer to let you drive mine around to check out the 4.10s, but... Let me know if you get to DC any.
Best bet would be to find some local guys who had gears and spin their cars around the block.
I did ALOT of research and asked ALOT of ppl in the know. I went with the 3.90s. I autox, drag race, and road race my car. I have done all but the road race and I absolutly LOVE the gears. I would never go back.
First, what does the car get used for and what power does it make?
not many mods yet, longtubes straight pipes and vararam also its a daily driver.I'll also be getting a tune soon i just want to make the most out of what ive got.
Not a great difference between the two gearsets. As others have stated, if you plan on adding a lot of power down the road, go with the higher gears (3.90s). I love my 4.10's though. Makes an instant improvement.

I had the 4:10's.....a little too steep. Felt like I was drag racing the car everytime I left a stop sign or traffic light. Also found myself shifing back and forth between 5th. and 6th. at around 50-55 mph on country back roads which is where I do most of my "relaxation" driving. At 2,000rpm in 5th. gear I'm doing about 53mph. If I remember correctly.
I guess it comes down to personal preference, just like everything else.
4:10's here and I think they are great, but I like to change gears also!
First runs out at around 15 MPH in traffic.
2500 in 5th is 64 MPH - high enough in the r's to make those 55 MPH country roads fun.
