I've used other brands of re-usable filters on a number of classic Chevy and Ford hot rods over the years. They have their advantages. Whether it's worth the initial cost of the re-usable filter is up to the car owner. It was nice to know I didn't have to drive 20 miles to find a filter.
Most of us will never bother to cut open an off the shelf filter open to see if there's any debris of concern. That's the big advantage. Appearance is an advantage. Some of the re-usable filters have the capacity to filter much finer microns of debris than off the shelf filters. There's also the advantage of saving landfills from more tossed out oil filters.

Cost wise I know it doesn't make sense. But it would be nice to easily view what the filter has actually filtered out. Anyone know if these filter better or worse than a premium oil filter?
OEM or better quality filters cost $5 - $6 (or maybe even a skosh less) depending on where you shop. A super premium filter will run $9 - $11. If the reusable filter were priced at $50 or so, it might be worth considering. At $200 it's a bragging point about how much one can spend on their toy with no practical relation to cost effectiveness or improved protection.
Look, I agree the filter is over priced. I'm just wondering how well it actually works compared to regular oil filters. Has anyone seen any information about how well it filters?
I work in the aircraft industry and was very familiar with the type of filter media used in the type filter mentioned in the orginal post. So I tried one for about 6 months and had to take it off. It's length causes it to hang about 1 1/2 inches below the bottom of the factory filter. One nice drive in Big Bear and a encounter with a rock in the road ended that experiment. The rock went under the car and hit the filter can off center and spun the two piece canister loose. The smell of oil burning on the exhaust was cause for a look under the car and we found the canister loose. Tighened it up, drove home and took it off. I now have a $200.00 aluminum paper weight.
Hey Shylor, don't feel bad, I posted this topic about this particular filter months back and got the same responses. The main thing that nobody has mentioned, though, is the fact that the company says this filter will do a much better job of filtering your oil! I mean catching smaller particles that regular filters cannot catch, not just keeping your oil cleaner for a greater amount of time. Then would it be worth the $200 bucks if this were true? You bet your a$$ it would be!
I have not seen any data on this filter in comparison with disposable ones so I don't know if their claims are true or not. But if their claims are accurate, it's a no brainer! As far as it hangin down lower, which I did not know, that is a major problem and could sway me away from it even WITH better filtering properties.

The catch-22 in all this is that the filter may work better but the increased filtration comes at a cost of higher pressure drop across the filter. The relief valve in the oil pump bypasses the filter when pressure reaches the spring load on the bypass valve and pumps straight to the lubricated surfaces. The reusable filter should probably be cleaned at least a couple of times between oil changes.
Does the resuable filter maker give any advice on cleanout frequency?
