Default Problem with '00 Badly Need Help!

Driving home from town today, the check engine light came on and the engine begins to run roughly like a dead miss and runnig rich on left side (Smoke coming from left exhaust). When the clutch is fully disengaged, there is a knocking sound coming from the rearend but I belive it is because the engine is running rough.

I pulled into the garage, checked for codes and every code was followed by an H for history. The check engine light is on, so the ECM knows something is wrong yet no codes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bobby

Was just down checking the timing on the coils just for giggles and a code was finally thrown: PO300 - missing on multiple cylinders. Off to the dealership tomorrow.

First, some codes are followed by both an "H" and a "C" ... meaning that the problem occured before (H - History) and also is occuring now (C - Current), so look carefully at the codes as you are almost sure to have a C code from the PCM with the Check Engine Light (CEL) on.

Easiest to read them in manual mode .... see :

https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...D=26&TopicID=1

for details on how to read them manually.

Even if no C codes (however unlikely) list the PCM codes (they start with P) that are listed as they may give an indication as to where the problem is coming from.

Last, take a look at spark plug wires, see if any are loose from either the plug or coil ends, and look for wires that may have been damaged by contact with the exhaust manifold (or near contact) or by rubbing against another part.

In your initial post you said it appeared to be on the left side .... in that case I'd pay special attention to cylinder #7 (closest cylinder to driver) as I've had problems with that one before. I found that in replacing the plastic cover over the fuel rail, either I or the mechanic knocked the plug wire partially out from the coil. At first the enormous voltage must have jumped whatever gap was there, but over time Ithe engine began to develop a slight hesitation (miss) under loads, and eventually reached the point of becoming a solid miss. I had to replace both the coil pack and the spark wire as both connections had been so badly damaged.

Again, HTH

Also, check the white connector to the left side that connects all the coils to the harness. Almost sounds like you lost your entire bank on that side. I haven't looked at the fuse layout, it might be right/left bank and worth checking also. Things like this are usually simple (once you find it).

Thanks for all the help. All wires are properly seated. Going to stop worrying with the car being Thanksgiving and all. Just hoping the delaership can fit me in tomorrow. On another note, does anyone know of a good vette shop in east TN (I am 50 miles from Knoxville and 50 miles from Chattanooga)

Thanks,
Bobby

Well, it ended up being a broken pushrod. Right there is my lesson to never let anyone drive my car (at least without me in it)

The dealer can check to see if the engine suffered an over red-line condition, which is probably what did this. Even though there is a rev limiter in the PCM you can still over-rev the engine by downshifting into too low a gear at high speed, such as a shift into first at 80 mph (I'm assuming you have a stick shift).

Good luck, hopefully the broken push rod did no other damage and the fix will be relatively simple.
