I want to buy a short shifter and wanted owners opinions on the best one. I want the shortest, smoothest working one. I figure on spending 180.00 to 240.00.
You should look at the c6z06 shifter - it is a big improvement over the stock shifter. You can buy a kit (shifter & ****) from one of the vendors (Fred Beans) that would fall in your price range. Just do a search to find posts with the exact steps, including pictures, for installation

The B&M is incredibly short, but very ratchety and rattles like mad.
The C6 shifter has the same throw, the shaft just has a slightly different angle and about an inch shorter than the stock C5 shifter.
No matter what you install if you want smoothness in the end you need to perform the anti-venom mod also. You can search for instructions on th eforum but they are kind of scattered. I hope to have a tech tip up by the end of the day outlining this procedure with pics.
But here is the short and skinny of it:
Anti-Venom mod:
You need:
- 15/16" socket and wratchet with approx 4-6" extention
- 3/4" ID brass washer approx 1/16" thick (typically a drain plug washer)
- rat tail file
There is a neutral detent plug that adds additional force between shifts. It is a brass plug with a spring loaded ball bearing in the end of it that pushes on some part of the transmissoin, I don't exactly know what. I am sure in the stock form this added pressure is needed so you can feel the shift gates and neutral, but with a short-shifter it's too much. If you shim this plug it dramatically smoothens and decreases the effort needed to shift.
If you look high up on the passenger side of the transmission there is a brass plug with a slightly raised round center. Take this plug out and add the washer to it, you may need to bore the center with the rat tail file to make it fit over the bolt depending on the exact size you got. Clean the surface of the trans, bolt and washer and re-install the bolt with the washer. That is it! Now go test the feel of your shifter and bask in the glow of easy, quick and precise shifts.
I also suggest performing the shift box linkage adjustment while you are replacing the stock shifter, it will also help smooth shifts out.
Have you tried lubricating the stock shifter (pivot point and linkage actuator) and adjusting the housing mount? Makes a big difference in shifter smoothness and engaging each gear. I too was troubled by the stock shifter until I did these changes in addition to physically shortening the shifter. After removing the unthreaded part of the shifter and completing the above I couldn't be more pleased. True, the shifter is not a bonifide "short throw" shifter but is quiet and works very well as a daily driver. The removal and re-install is too easy (read past threads on removing the plastic and shifter unit) and is worth a try prior to spending close to $200.00 for an aftermarket or C6Z06 unit (same unit only slightly shortened and angled slightly backward).
I have shortened/reinforced my stock shifter and adjusted/lubricated with very positive results. May not seem as sexy as buying a true short shifter but does work very well. The stock shifter is subject to lots of verbal abuse but isn't too much different from the aftermarket units but doesn't vibrate or make noise. In fact, I will make the modification for any forum member for $75.00 (time and materials). With an aftermarket shift **** it is great for daily use and for aggressive driving on favorite back roads. Just presenting an alternative to the subjective opinions of aftermarket shifters.
Hurst all the way. I've never had It done but I've been told that you can adjust the shift firmness on the Hurst. I like It set at the firmest setting. All around great shifter and It's hard to miss a gear. The lower height Is a perfect fit for laying your arm on the armrest..What I mean Is...Your wrist Is only about 1" In the air & It's alot more comfortable. It's hard to explain~It just feels like It should have come from the factory.
C6 Z06 shifter is shorter and smoother and costs about $220. I also like the look and feel of the shif **** a lot better than stock or any other for that matter.

With all due respect to those recommending the Hurst, it is NOT smooth. It is what I would describe as notchy which just happens to be one of the things I like most about it. But LarryD1974 is looking for something smooth. From all the short throw threads I've seen lately I'd recommend you look into the MTI shifter.
I have the Hurst and I like it. If you decide on a Hurst or B&M, go to www.jegs.com to purchase it. They are much cheaper than most vendors and have great return policies. Hurst is $169 from Jegs.
Well everyone has different opinions. My 115 Lb girlfriend shifts my Z no problem, she actually likes the way It feels~ It's all a matter of taste. I love the Hurst shifter and won't use anything else now.
I have the C6 shifter and it is as quiet as stock but not much shorter throw - look cool though.
The C6 and C6Z06 shifters are the same. The throw is exactly the same as the previous C5 with the only difference being a drop in height of a little less than one inch. Just so folks know the facts.
I have the new B&M shifter for C5 and C6's. Its perfectly quiet, but might be a bit to notchy for your tastes as you want smooth. But great race car feel
