ok guys, my dealer called and the parts are in. My car is going in next week to have the rings replaced because of the oil consumption issue. Would appreciate any comments from those who have done it. Are you happy with the fix ? Any new problems ? Has your oil consumption stopped ? Still not comfortable with the idea of my engine being yanked and torn down. So should I do it, or buy stock in mobil and continue to put a quart in every 1000 miles ?..Thanks for input in advance !
What did you do at your dealer to get the fix. My car has been documented onder oilwatch with a consumption rate of 1qt./600 miles; however, the dealer keeps telling me that the fix is not yet available. Is there a secret to getting the work done?
I did'nt do anything special. Talked to the service manager at my dealer (midway Chevy in Phoenix, AZ). I also placed a complaint by calling the chevy 800 number for customer complaints. My car is a 2001 Coupe Black/Lt Oak Z51/6spd car.
I wouldn't do it. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks on oil than risk the dealer fuc*ing up the car. It's happened to others. Hope everything works out for ya
Has your oil concern been correctly recorded? The basic's should have been performed before pulling the engine,to have it re-ringed.The first steps that the dealer's tech should have recorded besides from recording the amount of oil being used with a oil-consumption sheet(which is what GM wants performed first). The tech should remove all 8-spark plugs and record thier cylinders.Perform a cylinder leak-down,and if at the time the the plugs are remove and the tech finds a cylinder which shows that its consuming oil, make sure that that cylinder has proper ign(coil output and ign wirer).Having a cylinder which is not firering correctly will cause you to consume oil.I would rec-installing 8 new spark-plugs then have them removed at a later date to recheck the readings of the plugs for oil consumption.
*note:before any work is performed the tech should perform a dia-systems check, scan the computer and record any dia-trouble codes, also check the failure-records to see if there is any mis-firer cylinders.Wm
No dealer is going to rip apart my engine, they F up basic stuff as it is. Use a cheaper oil, or live with the usage untill u get rid of it.
You're better off getting it fixed that burning oil for an extended period of time, that can't be good for an engine. When it came time to get rid of the car, who'd buy an oil burner without wanting it for free? I'd let the dealer fix it. If they screw it up it's under warrantee. It would be much easier to unload the car after the oil burning issues are fixed.
You need a couple of data points from past posts. More than one owner of an oil burner has reported that consumption stabilized at acceptable levels after 6K to 8K miles. The real indicator that the rings are the problem is that the oil turns black within a couple of hundred miles after change. One member of the Z06 section had an oil burner that turned the oil black, and ran conventional 10-30 oil for 1000 miles at low throttle and low RPM. this fixed his problem and he went back to running Mobil 1. He had about 6K on his car and I remember that he was burning a quart in 500 miles. If you are burning a quart every 1000 miles I personally would leave things alone for now. Good luck.

Running dyno oil will void the warrantee. See's like a pretty risky experiment on a brand new engine with what could be a serious problem. If it got towed in with Dyno oil in it, one would be up the creek!
I too have heard that the Mobil 1 5-30W is the problem, and that GM has not addressed it yet (kinda like they are just getting around to the column lock thing). I have been told to go to 10-30w and you will not have oil consumption. When my heads a cam job is finished, I will be using Royal Purple brand racing oil.
Thanks for the input. Probably should have stated this in the begining. I've been running Mobil-1 10w30 since the first oil change..and that was at 1000 miles.
These motors don't need thick oil. They've been using 5W30 since my '90, maybe even my '86 and they didn't burn oil. It's not the oil that causes the problem. Thicker oil will not lubricate as well when cold (it doesn't flow as easily) and can do more to hurt than to save your motor.

My dealer just changed mine over from 5/30 to 10/30 indicating that should help. Based on your comment this will not help.

That is news to me. Not doubting it, but I've never heard that improper ignition will result in oil consumption. Can anyone confirm this?
My 2001 ls1 is apart now at the dealership getting knew rings. I brought it in because it started suddenly misfiring badly in cylinder 3. BTW, they used 2x4s on the rocker panels to lift the car. They do not use lift pads :mad The service manager knows I'll be checking the rockers very very closely when picking up the car.
I decided to let them re-ring it because I'm already sueing GM to buy back the car for oil consumption and this latest trip adds 7 days for a total of 31 days in the shop(lemon law > 30 under Beverly-Song Consumer Warranty Act - California).
