I have a 1998 A4 with 147,000 miles. After driving in a parade at Cocoa Beach, Fl with stop and go for 1 hour, the automatic temp was 212F. Driving home the automatic was stuck in 3rd. From a stop light it would start out in 3rd. I have to manually shift it 1,2,3,drive. On the highway it will not kick down other that out of overdrive. The today temperature is now OK 160 at highway speed (outside temp 65 - Florida). I have experience in rebuilding a 700R4, but never these new electronic controled automatics. Anyone have any suggestions? Need help.
I guess your tranny is dead.
There is only one way to go: www.rpmtransmissions.com
Very very high quality trannies, very strong and great people to deal with! You cant go wrong
No codes. I have to manually shift, it does not slip. It won't go into 1st. If I manually shift it, I can start in 2nd. Manual up shift and down shift required. CAN THIS BE THE COMPUTER. WHERE IS THE COMPUTER FOR THE TRANS?

you should have faults. if you put the car in reverse,do you get reverse lights? maybe you have a manual valve position sensor problem?
i think your problem is electrical, not mechanical and i don't think it's pcm related.almost sounds like the pcm is not seeing drive.
either way,be it mechanical or electrical, you should have a fault stored.try driving it and checking for faults WITHOUT turning the car off and see if you have any faults stored.

Not getting any faults for the trany, but I will check it again tonight.
I hope you are right regarding it being electrical. I did check it last night and the reverse lights do come on. There are solenoids listed in Rock Auto for 1-2, 2-3, 3-2. Therefore it is not just a bad solenoid. It appears more like it does not get the signal other than in and out of overdrive.
I really like and trust my old boss for transmission diagnostics, over in Merritt Island. Also, i really like Callagy Tires on 520 <just west of A1A>
If the transmissions not slipping, that could be a good sign. Have you checked the fluid? It could be in fail safe mode <not sure if the C5's have this feature or not> But again that would raise the question why no codes .
This weekend you'll get to meet Rodney and Todd. I'm sure they'll have some ideas.
Hey Chris, Thanks. Will have to slip under and check the level. Plan to pick up Steve at MCO at 3:00PM today.
That's what i hear! Do you need any tools/jacks for getting under the car and checking the level? Would you like to come to my house to do it? after you pick up Steve?
