I think I have a problem. This morning I was on my way to work and noticed when I stopped at a stop light, my car temp would shoot all the way over and peg in the red. I would get the DIC pop up that says coolant overheated. I have never had this happen before. Is there something I need to do? I checked the fluids and they seem to be fine. My car has only 35k on the odometer.
Well, I think that we can say it is not a good thing unless for some reason the gauge was mal-functioning.
Was there any overflow from the cap? I would start by draining the system, refill and burp it good to make sure that all of the air is out of the system.
Seems to me like there was just an air pocket in the system. Usually the problem when there is just a freak overheating. I have never had it happen in the Vette, but had it happen 3-4 times in my 03 Cobra.

Any suggestions?
Check under the car, in front of the radiator for trash / debris like leaves, plastic bags, paper etc.
You need to check the area in front of the AC Condensor for trash and there is also a space between the AC Condenser and the Radiator that can plug up with debrie.
My guess id that the fans didnt come on for what ever reasson. They chould have come on around 230. Check the fuses and plugs for the fans.

BTW - you won't get an air bubble in the system just out of the blue, the only time you may wind up with an air pocket is when the system is drained and refilled.
Fans are supposed to come on when you turn on A/C. Start car, open hood, have some one turn on A/C and see if fans come on. If they don't check fuse and/or relay. As other have posted check up under front for debris in radiator area. They don't call these vacuum cleaners for no reason.
Check all the above and then see if you have any codes. I replaced my battery awhile ago and the temp gauge would peg and then go back down. I reset the codes and the problem disappeared. Worth a try.
Funny things about C5. Some DTC's if set as history will prevent or disrupt the function that it represents. Different year C5 get affected in different ways. My 98 and 02 Z are both different. My 02 Z HVAC functions will stop if I have certain DTCs set. If I clear them, the damn thing works normal! The 98 had Column Lock function failure if any CL history DTC was set. Once they wee cleared, everything returned to normal.
Always check, log and clear the DTC's to see if they come back an if the function is regained.
