But these all have the same diameter blade... so I don't see how it can let any more air in, the system is only as strong as the weakest link, which in this case is the diameter of the TB where the blade is.

I think they usually cut the back half of the TB blade shaft, which probably frees up a small amount of airflow (really small); and they smooth the airflow path by porting the body and "knife edging" the blade. Smooth air flows better than "bumpy" air, so it does have a positive impact. I think you are probably looking at 5HP for $150, and maybe a little better throttle response.

my current setup is a bone stock LS1 with borla cat back and vararam. do you guys think the TB is a worthwhile investment at the moment, or should i wait until later?
Mark does fantastic work. I was lucky enough to pick up one of his ported throttle bodies in the Parts for Sale section. It runs really smooth and throttle response is super! As all C5 and Z06 throttle bodies are identical, if anyone needs a core, I have an absolutely perfect, 2000, C5 stock throttle body I'd let go for $90.00, shipped. Then, when you get the ported Shaner back, just resell yours for what you paid for this one. No downtime and no $250 core charge. I have pictures if anyone's interested.

Still available for $90.00, shipped. You'll be able to sell it for what you paid, no problem.
