The only time I use my traction control mode is when it's raining or slick (only very occasional ice/snow here in central Texas). On dry pavement, I don't like having the computer shut me down if I'm drifting around a corner or trying to lay into the gas and she just won't go....
I'm not a racer, but I do like to have fun.
I'm same. I turn T/C off on dry pavement, but if it's raining I definitely leave it on. Don't have A/H.
My 99 has Comp mode and if the streets are dry and its fairly warm out, thats what I use. This time of year T/C is on all the time.
Bill Curlee hit the nail on the head in his first page reply. I wound up in a field after doing a complete 180 degree spin in 50 degree weather, with the T/C off.. The car hit 2nd gear at around 50 mph with the hammer down,, steering wheel not pointed 100% directly straight. .. Caught me by surprise, almost s*** in my pants.. Luckily no damage.. Don't go around thinking it won't happen to you, eventually it will catch you off guard... My T/C stays on all the time now in cooler weather.... Well now... That is except when I want to have some fun
Not more power but it will not cut out the fuel when it breaks loose! I know I have the same year and it just seems to feel that way! but in reality youre able to give it all it's got and keep going w/no cut out!
I leave it on for DD and only switch it off for fun. I've seen too many end up wrecked and or totalled in daily situations where if it were on chances are the car wouldn't have gotten away from them by surprise.
The only time I use T/C is when I forget to turn it off. I understand that there is alot of people that really need T/C on at all times and it is probably a good thing. However I could really see myself without it. How anoying it is to have to push "traction control" and then "reset" everytime I drive the thing. People always ask me what the h*ll I'm doing when they hear the "boop boop" noise. I usally tell them I'm just punching in the coordinates for our jump to light speed.
Isn't it great when you try to pull out in front of traffic our merge on the highway and T/C bogs down the car when you shift so that traffic almost hits you from behind.

If you are spinning your tires as you merge on the highway at 70mph, I really doubt anyone would hit you from behind unless you made a gross miscalculation as a driver. And if that's the case, I think everyone else on the highway would feel safer if you left it on.
These cars can fish tail real bad with out it on. Unless you have experience in keeping the car out of a spin and know in what direction to steer when it does start to fish tail and stay off the brakes, might want to leave it on and find a private empty lot and practice with it. When I was 17 my dad took me out and taught me how to drive and to experience all the things a car could do and what you shouldnt do on a public road. Good Luck
I leave it on for regular driving. The thing is that I'm not 100% alert / aware 100% of the time. I admit it. No one is. Navigating canyon twisties or whatever, I am extremely alert, but in daily driving, honestly, I'm not at that level. Too exhausting to be hyper-vigilant for long periods every day. The computer doesn't get fatigued, doesn't have bad days, doesn't have its mind on some other aspect of its life, etc. I'll turn the TC off sometimes, but I know it's like eating a very rare hamburger (which I do too, sometimes.) Really tasty, but some additional risk involved.

O.k probably a slight exaggeration. But have you ever been stuck behind a slow car and decided to to take your only chance to quickly switch into the faster lane. Slip it into second, switch over a lane and jam third as to not hinder the progress of the approaching vehicle and suddenly "bluurp" the motor bogs down. How embarrassing.:o

I've never been able to activate TC by shifting into 3rd unless it was on slick pavement. TC was a good thing then. TC may reduce acceleration by a small bit but I've never seen it actually slow my car down like brakes. If your TC is pulling your car down in speed, there must be something wrong with yours. I'd get it checked out.
My T/C seems to sense that shifting to 3rd may cause maybe the slightest chirp from the tires. So it kills all power and oh-so-gradually allows me to accelerate. I must say GM designed this system to be sensitive.
All that aside. Have you ever tried to do something cool in the car like chirp second or slide it a little around a turn and then T/C just completely ruins the fun?

Definitely. It will ruin any aggressive accellerating motion but for normal driving, I leave it on with no issues. If I approach a safe area where I might "play" a little, I just hit the button in advance and hit it again when it's over. Better to be safe than sorry.
How exactly does comp mode work?? Also this is off subject but what is the little amber light on the right under side on the rearview mirror?? Sry but i just got my vette today and im learning
How do you turn that little amber light off, it annoys me like crazy and I don't want to break the mirror!
i leave mine off, always
i have several autocross overall FTD's
other people ask me to drive their car, and i usually run faster times, and the first thing i notice before i go is the traction control is on!!!
turn it off, problem solved
