I hope someone can help me. Tonight I was backing out of my driveway, put the car in drive, and it kept going backward. I put the car in other gears and it still continued backward. So I guess the transmission broke in reverse gear? Also the shifter "slides" up & down without stopping at any particular gear. If it is shot, what am I looking at in repair cost?
Your feedback is much appreciated.
Thanks,
John
Is the selector control cable a part on an automatic transmission & if it is, can it be fixed by someone with limited transmission knowledge?
Thanks,
John

sounds like the selector cable has popped off. i think your trans is fine! lift up the vehicle and manualy (on the side of the trans case) go through the gears. chances are you have a popped off/broke cable or a bad shifter.

people, there is not a 'cable' on the C5's, there is a linkage rod
John, It would be a good idea to remove the console and make sure the basics are together properly, I have never seen the problem you are describing, but would think 'effort needed' would be noticeably reduced
I will tell you I have seen aftermarket shifters installed with the bolts backed out after a few hundred miles, this could be the cause of your problem

On C5's with an automatic transmission there is a cable that connects the shifter and transmission, on C5's with a manual trans there is a shifter rod (solid piece) that connects the shifter and trans.
I was just assuming he had an automatic by his description of the shifter sliding up and down without stopping at any gear.
