I'd go with the opinions of people that have actual, true experience of whats going on, like tuners and engine builders. Many people will tell you what they THINK you should do, without ever have done it before. With that said, its more risky I THINK to try putting a new bearing in, I'd just clean the bearing edge up and run it.
Another pic... looks a little flakey just the the right of the 6 o'clock position. I really can't believe how soft this lead/copper bearing is.
... which is probably why the copper readings in LSx used oil analysis reports are usually pretty high...
Brian,
Can't really contribute to the technical discussion as in T1 we just drop in a crate motor and go, but wish you the best of luck whichever way you decide to go.
Cam is in... carefully filed the nick w/ a very small file, then took 1000 grit to the upper scratch and sanded it a smidge, then wiped clean w/ a paper towel etc... all is well cam went in very easily, spins fine.
That bearing is fine.................seen a lot worse wear/damage
that hes seen it on numerous LS1s, and even the whole thing worn on a few LT1s.
My guess is the timing chain loading causing bearing wear on the front cam bearing........if the endplay is correct
The front bearing gets the least amount of oil compared to the rest.....
This is worn(I have still seen worse!)...........and would most likely need replacement as well as the other 4 of them.
The LS1's main oil galley feeding the main bearings and the camshaft simultaneously (the Small-Block main galley fed the cam bearings first, then the mains). The Gen I/II oiling system was very reliable and that the change in oil routing in the new engine came mainly out of manufacturing concerns.........

Good luck on the restart...........always a good thing
Boy I'm glad I had CT Corvette do my cam! When I do stuff myself it comes out right but I worry about every little detail and often take twice as long to do the job as someone who has done it a few times. I have no idea what my cam bearings looked like after 130k mi but the car runs great and has good oil pressure...no worries here!
Your on the money Chris. Just got back from checking it out, it looks alot worse in the picture then it reality, a jewels file to knock off the gouges edges and a little emery cloth for the scratch. Just my QA structural mechanic opinion...BTw when i did my H/C swap this past summer i didn't have to remove my A/C condenser, had enough room after pushing it forward a little to pull the cam out.
Hey Mike, being QA and all, I figure youd enjoy the fact that within the past month, Ive managed to find myself in two different aircraft who's main gear boxes decided they were calling it a day. Looks like you and Brian are havin fun up there in VA....Im just getting ready to tear into mine within the next few weeks. Take care!

Hey Greg, long time no hear. Hows things going for you besides the MGB? I hope you didnt have to ditch the helo's in the bay like we did when ours failed. what are your plan's for the Z? you going to be able to make it to CF VIII?
Fortunately, first one was on deck here at the seawall, the second one was on short final into Austin. The second one actually ended up that one of the brain trusts that they have assembling these things in Cherry Point left a couple of the aluminum assembly shims in the gear box when it was closed up. We pulled the chip detectors on deck in Austin and got a couple hundred aluminum flakes that looked like pencil shavings....some and inch or bigger. After playing the flush/fill/penalty turn game for a few days, we got a one time flight home and they replaced it back here.
As for the car, Im shopping around for heads and cam right now. Im leaning towards the new Trick Flow heads and possibly the same G5X2 Brian's putting in but on a 112 LSA. Any and all suggestions are much appriciated. If you saw the November issue of Popular Hot Rodding, that was my vette in the Top 20 photo contest....only mods so far are the rims/tires, clear corners, and PIAA fog lamps. Next up is heads, cam, long tubes, FAST 90/90 and a few other ods and ends. Hope alls well up at -14.
Greg
I'd love to order the new 418 shortblock from texas speed, ETP 225 LS7 style heads w/ a FAST 90/90 ported
However I think this cam will hold me over just fine
yea i know, ive got the pics, just havent switched it yet....oh yea, I just bought a 2007 Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob.....flat black paint, blacked out motor, chrome pipes...Ill get some pics up lata
