Column Lock/Pull key wait 10 second experts, step inside
2000 Coupe and column lock done by dealer one year ago, and I got the Pull key wait 10second message today. Here is the exact scenario:
Went to gas up, turned off engine, took out key-steering wheel retracted and I put the key back in the ignition before it fully retracted. Finished gasing up, started the car, put it in reverse, and then drive and the car shut off w/ message. Shook steering wheel while counting to ten seconds and it started, and I drove home right away with no issues. I also tried to duplicate the failure when I got home with no luck.
Question #1--did I put the security system in reset mode or "Watchdog mode" by pulling the key and then back in before the steering wheel fully retracted?
Question #2-- Is it likely to happen again? I am a Tech that works on Avionic equipment, and I have sent units into reset mode by powering up the units incorrectly by cycling power too fast. I this a similiar scenario?

Reason: forgot additional details
I can't help you on either of your questions but from my short experience, when i bought the car a month ago i had the service record pulled up on it and 2 recalls were done for the column lock, Yet i could hear it engage and disengage when i first got in the car. I had the warning come up once on me. Installed the CLB and have no issues, no more warnings, no more locks engaging...and piece of mind.
You could of just had a case of the dirty pellet syndrome.
Roger that, I cleaned the pellet after doing more research on the subject and I do have the A4, also no codes are present.
Since my Steering column DID NOT lock when this happened, I am unsure if this is related to the column lock. I maybe wrong (would'nt be the first time) about the failure, but when I cleaned the pellet, the q-tip was quite dirty.
On a side note, my dad's 03 Buick Regal is falling dead after starting the car and moving a few feet. I told him to clean his resistor pellet too .

It is in the key, look at the key. That black pellet with a silver center is actually a resistor. Sometimes when that gets dirty, it will not make contact in the ignition and will enable the security feature.

I've had the recall done and everything fine for a long time now. When I recently did the emissions test they plugged into the OBII plug and when they disconnected I got the pull 10 sec. warning. I did so and it started and has been fine. Apparently the computer is very sensitive to gremlins or ??
RL,
I feel (felt) your pain. I had a 99 A4 Vert that was perfect except for this ongoing saga. I installed the CLB, I installed a new Harness K, I even swapped keys with my spare key that had never been used, the dealer even did the recall once in spite of me telling them I had a CLB. I double checked to make sure my CLB was still in place. Even after all of that, I'd still get the 'Pull Key Wait 10 Sec' message. I would even get a "Service Column Lock" message" occasionally, even though I knew the column would not and could not lock. Neither message would allow the car to move until I had pulled the key and said ten cuss words. It always came back.. I did the only thing that made me feel better.... I traded the damn thing in on a Hemi Magnum and bought another C4!
Now I only have to deal with leaking water pumps and buying an expensive alternative to the Optispark.
Not to depress you too much, but I was obsessed with straighting out my problems with the C5 Column Lock/Wait 10 Sec issue and I never could. I finally gave up and moved on. My Mag Red/Oak was one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen, but I just got fed up because in my case, apparently there was no solution.
Quasar99,
Thanks for the reply, this was the first time, and hopefully the last time I will see this message. I cleaned the pellet, and I have done about 25 start/restart cycles since then and have not seen the message. I am changing the start process now, turning the key to on and letting the fuel pump prime, and then starting the engine.

I wish you continued good luck. I'm putting an MSD Distributor in place of the Optispark on the C4 this weekend. Always something to keep me out of trouble with these cars....
