Default What Would Cause LIfters To Turn?

I have a 408, and the cam bolts backed out. When we took the front cover off and tried to turn the cam we discovered two lifters had turned. What would cause this? The guy that works on the car said it has to do with a bad lifter cup, especially the cup with a 10 stamped on it. Are there any other reasons two lifters would turn? I had to replace all the cups, lifters, and the cam. Thanks for the input.

There were some issues with the "10" lifter tray, but the angle they were off I thought was very small. How much did the lifter turn, from your description is sounds like 90 degrees. Was it a small angle? Did you have an "10" lifter trays?

Photo's? The cam backing out might have been the cause too.

The lifter turned 90 degrees. It beat one of the lifters up pretty bad and the other not quite as bad. It scared the cam pretty good as well. A machinist was able to polish the cam to be usable.

After replacing the cam, lifters, and lifter cups I noticed my oil pressure dropping. We checked the oil today and found metal on the plug. The motor is out and the mains are trashed. Not sure if it was metal from the lifters or metal from the broken cam sprocket that was found today. This **** is getting frustrating. Cam bolts had backed out right after first rebuild. Its been up hill all the way. May be someone is trying to tell me something. Thanks for the input.

Maybe you should look at the Katech 427 thread

Sorry to hear, and unfortunately, you are not the first to have this happen either. PewterC5 just got his back together with a new motor.

I saved it this morning and am going to share it w/ my engine builder. That is still more $ than I can spend now. It would be nice to have all the money back and start fresh from hear. I could afford to build one really nice motor.

Did you engine builder clean the bolt threads and cam threads and thean locktite the cam bolts??? They should have had locktite put on the clean threads when the engine was built. If he didn't clean the threads before or even didn't use locktite, then its his fault.....

I assume he did. He is also a good mechanic and a honest guy. I think he would take responsibility if he did something wrong. I will say something is consistently going wrong and I am not abusing the car. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Loctite was used on the cleaned threads and they were torqued with a torque wrench. However they still backed out so I'm going to take care of it, new cam, lifters, and timing chain.

And the cup that the lifters spun in was the cup with "10" on it.

Didn't see that. The wife said 7 hrs. was enough and took the remote. I don't know if the buyer should be happy or sick. I would be sick.

It was the guy in the brown hat that bought several of the other cars. He looked happy, now he has a one of a kind car that no one else in the world has.
