Well i finally bought another c5. '98 with high mileage (122,000). I caught a flight to buy the car, the drove it 17 hrs home. The only problem I knew of with the car, was that the horn didn't work. I've now learned that:
the ebrake doesn't work
both door panels are peeling
has a broken exhaust hanger
the a/c is draining back into the passenger side of the car
I have at least one bad tps
Have a bad case of the sticky clutch
The gas door only opens from the manual release
I have the corvette seat rock
Every morning i get to see "pull key wait 10 sec."
some days i get "service column lock"
and every other day i get "service active handling" and "service abs"
have a bad belt tensioner
I know that its an old car with a lot of miles. I bought it for a cheap price also. I do most of my own work, so fixing most of these things isn't that big of a deal (just need to find the time). I just wish I would have known these things before I bought the car. I've bought most of the parts that I need, but still have a few I can't figure out. Searching this forum has been a big help though.
Can anybody give me advice on the dic messages that i'm seeing. Mainly the active handling/abs ones.
Sneak a peak at the rear differential, you will see a housing with brake lines running to it if it is in the back. Otherwise, it is directly in front of the alternator. It is about the size of a motorcycle battery.
For the traction control/abs. This came on my car in 2 circumstances. First there was a drop in voltage in the wiring. That was simple, found the problem spot and ran a new wire from there to the computer. Wire looked fine but it wasn't working. Next problem was a couple weeks ago when there was air in the brake system the same codes came up again. After switching the rear calipers that I put on wrong and bleeding that went away! Good luck...my question to you is why did you still buy the car or complain for a lower price before driving off or just leave period with all of those problems.
thanks for the pics, its in the front. I cleaned all the grounds up front, but it still does it occasionaly. To answer you question IDM, this was cheapest c5's I could find. I had the bank cut a check, then I flew to florida and bought the car. Then I drove it the 17 hours back (where I found most of the problems).
how many do you have lol?
I found several problems with mine too after I got it from dallas and drove it back to florida. It was sure fun sorting it all out
