Default Porting Fast LSX Intake

I have ordered a 90mm Fast intake with the matching throttle body. I noticed that this intake can be ported. What am I going to port? I assume it is where the intake meets the heads. I have ported/polished LS6 heads, stage III and a FM-13 cam. Do I have to port the intake to match these heads? Is this hard to do and is it expensive? Anyone done this porting before? Is it required?

May seem like silly questions but if you have read any of my threads you will notice that I have ZERO technical knowledge!

Thanks for the replies guys!!!

On a H/C motor, having it ported can net you another 15hp or there about. Tony Mamo at AFR is the best at doing this and his work is nothing short of spectacular. Cost i belive is between 300-400.

Would he need to know what H/C set up I have or is there just a standard port that gets applied?

I've seen before and after dynos of his porting with 0 gain. Maybe additional tuning is required?

And his prices have gone up to over $400.

There was some discussion regarding this on another forum. I've had mine ported but I didn't do a before and after. I can tell you that BLACKTOP2000 has a 2000 FRC that is almost identical to mine. We both dynoed on the same day with LS6 manifolds and 78mm throttle bodies. He went 416 rwhp to my 413. He has an M6 with 3:42's and I have an M6 with 4:10's. He put on an unported FAST 90/LS2 TB and I put on a Mamofied FAST90/NW90 TB. No other changes. Back to the same dyno and we did some pulls on the same day. He went 433 rwhp tuned, and I went 439 rwhp tuned.
---
FWIW, I think the whole intake system needs to be evaluated as the weakest link will skew any results. I have a Vararam, 85mm descreened MAF, big carbon fiber air bridge an NW TB. BLACKTOP2000 has the same ingredients, but a stock airbridge and LS2 TB.
---
I also remember that Tony did some airflow benchmarks before and after porting and found that the stock LS6 was somewhat more restrictive than a good ported head. The FAST was an improvement, but not by much. Finally a ported FAST did flow about 10-12 cfm better than a stock one. More air means more hp if you are tuned for it, but getting that air to the manifold via the intake system has to be optimized also, and I'm not saying that my intake system is optimized as I don't have the tools to do any measurement other than access to a dyno to determine the end product.

I have been watching this FAST stuff for a while and have also spoke to Tony off-line. I have seen really good gains all across the RPM range on those dynoes that have been put up as before and after so I find this interesting. One other note, scouting around on that internet sales site it appears that the FAST prices on the 90mm have been dropping a bit as they can be had brand new for $700 (unless these are blems or something).

Good info guys! Thank you very much.

So is the porting to match my heads?? Or is the port 'standard' across the board no matter what head/cam set up you have....?

I don't know about everyone else but my MOD funds are not a bottomless pit! There just about exhausted!!

Dropping another $400+ dollars to have my $700 FAST 90, port matched to my $200 LS2 TB and $1300 patriot stage II heads to gain who knows how much,,,,is NOT an option right now! Thats just insane!

Oh,,yea,,,,forgot about the $$$ already committed for my LS2 timing chain, timing chain damper, Power bond under drive pulley, head stud kit, gaskets, CAM, morel lifters, new push rods, VARARAM, LS6 shocks, ABS of Steel, EFI Live, LC-1 wide band, Shift Light and serpentine belt. Woops,,and the stereo system I just purchased!!!

I don't think my financier (wife) will take too kindly to that funding request!

I'm going to disassemble the FAST intake, bolt the bottom section to the heads and scope out any mis-match issues. Have dremmel tools to fix stuff like that!. I will also smooth out and blend any areas that look like they will impede air flow! I may not get a TONY MAMO port job, but it better than nothing or not trying!! As long as you don't HOG OUT the intake, your most likely not going to hurt anything and most likely making improvements!!

Actually, the porting is not port matching, it is work in other areas of the intake to increase velocity.

There is a test in the making comparing the unported FAST against several ported versions, results hopefully soon as they were talking about trying to do all the dyno runs this weekend.

VETTENUTS....I will hold my breath until you can post these results! The FAST I ordered is in transit to me here in Ohio from Texas so I have a few days to decide its 'porting fate'!

As Bill asked....does anyone have pics as to where I am supposed to port this darn thing!? I was assuming it was a 'port match' but now given the above VETTENUTS post....I am clueless again!!

Here is the discussion on it. The two top porters seem to be Tony and Vengence. From everything I have read, port matching is not a part of their work it is all internal and I "believe" some of the work is on the short side radius down to the head.

Here's a graph that shows the gains from a Ported Fast90 vs an unported FAST 90 .....this will hopefully be a very useful "picture" to help gage the gains that are possible..

I ported my FAST myself. If you open the intake up its pretty obvious which areas need a little attention. Basically I just got rid of all the flash, the wedges at the end of the runner, and also did some work on the entrance of the runner. Then sanded everything smooth. The idea isnt to open the runner up, but to smooth it out and get rid of obstructions that would disturb airflow.

In a few months I will have some dyno results. We'll see how much I pick up over my LS6/ported tb combo. If anyone wants some pics of what I did let me know.
