Bill, do I get the AC shop to evacuate the system prior to me breaking it open? And then return after I'm done w/ the install so that they can refill? Or do I evacuate and refill at the same time (after I'm done with the install).
Welll,,,,,,,,in the interest of being green,,,,,,you should get the R-134 reclaimed but,,,if its all leaked out I wouldnt worry toooo much about it. Just flush the parts of the system that are going stay in the system, add the correct amount & type of oil, install the compressor, evacuate the system and add the "EXACT" amount of R-134A. Make sure that you install a new orfice tube and accumulator.

Make sure you add oil to the compressor crankcase prior to installing the compressor...especially if it is new. They have a seperate crankase for oil that does not circulate with the freon. You will burn up the compressor in 30 min if you do not add oil to the crankase of the compressor. You will see a bolt on the side of the compressor...this is the fill hold....oil can be bought from GM. It is different than the oil in the R-134 refrigerant.....

You cannot get to this fill hole when the compressor is installed
