Fuel gage dropped to empty while driving
My car is a 98 C5 A4 w 37k miles. Just taking a drive to charge the battery when the fule gage dropped to empty and I got a warning message. I stopped and turned the car off and the gage read normally for a minute or so and then dropped back to empty. I restarted in my driveway and it read normal for 30 seconds or so and then dropped to empty again. I washed the underside of the car a couple of months ago. Could it be the connection under the car. The info center reads accurately except for the range data. Any ideas anyone? Thx in advance. KC

This is a very common issue, try a search.
Basically, the higher-sulfur content fuels corrode the plating on the fuel sender contacts, creating an open circuit / empty fuel tank reading.
Most folks have successfully solved this by switching to BP, Chevron, etc., and / or adding Techron fuel cleaners to the tank.

2 bottles of Techron on an empty tank, then fill it. couple bottle every year and you'll be good. Unless you sender is really bad.

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago, I ran a couple cans of B -12 Chemtool through & since then I put a bottle of Techron every3 or 4 tanks & no more problems!
