Hello. I have a 2002 convertible. I would like to change to chrome Z06 style wheels. My question is, can I go one inch wider in the front and rear ( 8.5 to 9.5 front, and 9.5 to 10.5 rear ) and still use my original tires? The tires are in great shape, so I would like to keep them. Thanks for your help, Al.
Al, just to clarify, you have the GY runflats? While the wider Z06 wheels still fall within this tires' sizing parameters, I don't think it's the best sizing application. Be that as it may, if you are bound and determined, you can do it.
front tires are 245/45/17 the recommended spec is 7.5-9.0 inches wheel width
rear tires are 275/40/18 the recommended spec is 9-11 inches wheel width
The tires will have their sidewalls stretched outward... it is a European look...
It can be done, but looks a bit odd and the stretching opens up the bead area a bit and leaves the rim unprotected from curbs even in tires that have built in curb protectors.
here is a photo from a car show that shows stretched tires.. in this shot the rears are more noticable because of the angle.. you can see how the outside lip of the wheel is opened up and exposed...
