The DRL module senses the signal when the handbrake is relased and they come on at that point. Once they're on you can't turn them off without turning the car off even using a notch of handbrake.

The best way to inhibit them temporarily is to pull the A2 fuse. It works fine but affects the back up light operation on the approach light function, although they work fine as back up light in normal use.
