Default Tin can rattle

Took the vette out for a drive the other day and noticed another one of those dreaded noises. I have a 97 MN6 w/60k miles. In any gear when I get on it a little bit I get a noise that sounds like a tin can being drug underneath my car. I tried my wifes suggestion, but couldn't find a tin can underneath my car. Any help is appreciated.

I had that sound and it drove me nuts for a year, found out that I blew the cat core out of the can.

Same here, the first time.

The second time, I twisted the shaft inside my torque tube, with the wife and the dog in the car, out in Riverside, about an 1hr and 30mins from home. Made it back to Marina Del Rey, in 5th gear almost the whole way.

Both situations are costly, I hope for your sake, its your cats.

Good luck!

I am about to do a major overhaul anyways. I guess now instead of just doing a cat back, I should include my cats.

Cats, cats, cats, cats, cats.

Enough said.

Could be much worse, but start there. I barely bottomed out on a fill cover at a gas station. It cracked the honeycomb structure inside. I didn't notice it for a day, but that's what it was.

I pulled my x-over pipe off , and could move the element around. I got a hammer and long screwdriver and went to town. I now have one gutted cat. I'll go hi-flow sooner or later, but gutting the bad one made the noise go away 100%.

Is this the forward cat ? Has anyone ever drilled a small hole in the cat and installed a sheet metal screw? I have a rattle that has been driving me nuts for a year and think it may be the forward right cat. Would drilling a hole and installing a screw change the operation?

I had a rattle that drove me crazy for awhile; turned out it was a golf ball size rock that somehow lodged on top of the exhaust where it couldn't be seen. Dropped the exhause, the rock fell out..... after that, no more noise...

I have had a rattle for awhile also. Last night I got under there and found that the 2nd set of oxygen sensors has a cap where the wires go into them. They are causing my rattle. I thought it was the cats, but I am happy to say it is not. Just need to figure out how to secure the caps on the sensor. High temp silicon or something.

I had a rattle in my 99 coupe, It just about drove me crazy,, I changed the H pipe to the X pipe which I didn't like the sound of,, This car was totally stock everything pipes and all, after the X pipe it sounded like one of those Hondas with the big pipe on the end made me sick,,, bubble bee sound I hated it,, took it to one shop he couldn't find the problem,,,, it turned out to be my idlers,,, I replaced them and it sounded fine,,, when you would rev up a little you could hear it on the rev down side,,, you might check them while you into it,,,, hope this helps..

I have a rattling sound since i've had the car (1.5 years) Low RPMs giving it a little throttle i'll get that tin ticking noise that goes away by 15-1600 RPMs... my friend says it's probably Detonation! How concerned should i be? It only happens in the 1,000-1500RPM range...

I have an '03 A4 which rattles on deceleration when I sit in the garage in park, give it some gas and let it come down to idle. Anyone hear of this being an issue with automatics?

LF97C5Vette,
I've got the same kind of rattle. Unfortunately I do a lot of driving between 1,500 and 2,200 rpm. Very annoying and makes my dream car sound like a junker.

Mine is not just a consistent ticking - like a consistent or rhythmic noise... it's sporadic, and the ticks will sometimes be back to back - or spread out by a couple seconds...

Almost always gone above the 1600RPM range -but for the first time - a week ago, i heard it at WOT in 3rd gear. From like 3k to 5.5k i heard 4-5 Ticks, that were audible above my B&B Bullets and DTE Supermaxx LTs...

If it's detonation - what should i do to start fixing it? What causes this? Would i be able to easily diagnose detonation on a Dyno?

-Dan

ALLLLLLLLLLL 6 speed C5's rattle at this low RPM. Anyone that has a six speed that hears a rattle at low rpm, THIS IS NORMAL, ignore it.

It is due to close tolerances in the 6 speed transmissions.

This needs to be a sticky

Also never listen to your friend again, he will probably end up giving you advice that damages your car. what does he drive? A mustang?
