Default Drivetrain problems. Happen to anyone else?

So i was at the track lastnight(98 A4,intake, catback exhaust, and drag radials). I pull up, heat the tires up, wait at the tree with the RPM at 3k in N,drop it into D to take off. Then something snapped in the drivetrain.I moved a few inches. I know, stupid idea but i thought it was stronger than that. I am able to push the car wheil it is in P and there isnt any grinding noises. I know there are many things this could be, but has anyone had this same thing happen? Is there a site that shows break down pieces of the car? I have it up in the air with the exhaust off and the plate above it. I want to get ideas before i started taking everything apart. Help would be very much appreciated.

?? how would it be a joke. with the car on jacks, while it is in N,you spin one tire and the other spins the opp. way. While in park, one tire spins freely and the other u have to give alot of muscle to get it to spin.Is this the tranny?

Man looking at when you joined the forum you should know that the drive train is as week as a cat. There are way toooo many write ups about the drive train to not know. Get ready to spend some $$$$. Rodney is the best I have heard of on this forum. Sorry for your luck

Probably the tranny, as the wheels should be "locked" in park .... but could also be the diff, you could have stripped the splined shaft that inputs into the diff ... whatever.

Unless you're dad is a TV repairman (see Fast Times at Ridgemont High) and has an AWESOME tool collection ... you need to be looking for a shop to work on this.

Good luck,

3 grand in Neutral, then drop it into drive?? Without a hardened left output shaft? I'm afraid to powerbrake to 3 grand w/ my SS3200 stall and ECS 3.73 rear WITH a left hardened output shaft I'm guessing perhaps the tranny, or could be the rear carrier, but whatever, it ain't gonna be pretty

Since it's a 99 you need to consider the torque tube also.

No, the torque tube would have nothing to do with it in this case as the transmission and rear are together. In a normal layout, like an F-body, something like that would be possible but not here. The TT would have to be between the trans and the rear for it to be a possibility.

When I first got my license we would take moms station wagon out and do that stuff. Your gonna need a better approach to launching the car after it gets fixed. Good Luck

Default LS1Howto.com

Go to LS1Howto.com for an idea on rear removal.

My guess is that you broke the rear.

Next time powerbrake it in drive and you might break less (maybe).

Good Luck.

When you get it all apart I would suggest a hardened out put shaft and at least the hardened left shaft. Oh, and no more high rpms-dump it in drive starts.

I think its just that it sounds like a joke. Almost everyone knows not to do a neutral drop. You could take almost any new car right off the showroom floor and do that and break something.
Well, it seems you didnt know that, and it will be an expensive lesson. Take it to someone who know alot about corvette drivetrains to get if fixed. Good luck.

I know that your not supposed to do them, i thought that a pretty stock c5 could take it since it is a sports car.I've basicly abused the crap out of it for 2 years and this is the first big thing to go, so i am pretty impressed. How come when people ask lets say "what do i need to do to run a twin turbo setup" evryone says injectors and fuel pump and things but from the ones that i've read, i never see anyone say drivetrain.I would say thats a pretty big key to putting the power down. And i have read about people rebuilding to a stronger tranny and higher stall.I searched for weak links in the drivetrain and couldn't find anything on this forum. If anyone can find some please share. Thanks for all the input.

I did all my drivetrain mods when I did my power mods. I have hardened output shafts on both sides, hardened spider gear, hardened gear, a 9130 mainshaft in the trans, steel shift forks, CF synchros, bronze bushings and pads, blah blah blah. And its all tied together with a DTE brace.

I mean no disrespect to any one but guys think about it. These cars we never built for drag racing. No I'm not saying you shouldn't do it or can't do it but these are not made for drag racing. They're spots car made for road racing! When have you seen any of the major names in drag racing run an independent rearend? I'll bet they all run some type of locked up rear gear. If you drag race you have to expect this kind of failure. I'll be willing to bet that no one who successfully drag races a Corvette uses the stock independent rear end.
