Default Question about drone and soundproofing

May sound a little silly, but do the frostking and other soundproofing mods help with drone deterrance?

I have the b+b prt's ,a-4 and shorties, and they have always been fine for me,but I recently installed 3:42's and it changed things a bit.

Now I can see where the drone could get a little annoying,ANDI also plan on adding lg pro lt's with hi flow cats to the equation, which will probably make it even worse.

So,I love the exhaust and would like to keep it.But if the insulation mods won't help I may have to consider changing it I fear

Yes it will help the Drone about 30% so will an X-pipe if you do not already have one. You always had the drone but when you changed to the 3:42 it changed where it starts at, the m6 does not have as much problem with drone as they can change gears we cant.

It'll take the edge off it a bit, but the drone has to do with the exhaust note hitting the resonant frequencies of the cabin. Soundproofing and high flow cats are not going to help that situation at all. I would suggest the old "can I listen to your setup?" routine before it drives you crazy.

Well,if it drives me crazy then off it comes,'cause the lt's are going on for sure

I just thought if there was a chance the soundproofing would help,I may try that route first

I guess I won't really know until I put them on

I do not have the x-pipe, but will w/ the lg's

You know, it's funny,i never had an issue with the drone before. I thought that raising the rpm levels at certain speeds would make it less drone-prone,but in fact it made it worse.

For example at 70-75 I was turning@2,000-2200 rpm's before,now I am at 23-2500 rpms.
But in high gear at 70-75 under load,it can get annoying

I have put in the frost king in the vert 's trunk this winter, took the car out this week and the road noise appears to be the same. Will probably have to do the cabin next. FrostKing did not do it for me yet. I guess you get wath you pay for....

Is there a better sound proofing material available?

Dynamat is supposed to be better, maybe someone with it can chime in. My Corsa cat backs with headers & X pipe have no drone whatsoever.

Forum member, Choreo, did a great post on soundproofing about a month or so ago. There are several posts on this subject which where in the forum within the last month. I have done some other mods on my car now that the weather is better here in NJ, and I was going to go the Frost King route to help get rid of some of the noise from my runcraps until I trash them enough to justify getting another set of tires. Dynamat is supposed to be good, but it adds alot of weight to the car. Do a search, and I'm sure you'll find alot of great info from members. There are alot of different kinds of material available for soundproofing. Also, it seems that the storage compartments in the back of the car are a MAJOR source of resonance, so you might want to start there with some sort of sound proofing material.

Drone can also be felt in the sound vibration. So you may quit the drone somewhat but you will feel its vibration.

So just enjoy it.

I have B&B Bullets and I found that more watts of power was an excellent solution! Yank the Blose and drop in some aftermarket tunes...mask the drone with a 12" sub in the center compartment in the back. Works great!

If it drives you crazy, imagine how it sounds to people OUTside the car.

drone is so intense, that there's little you can do.

Is there a better sound proofing material available?
sure there is. Frost King is soundproofing "light"... low cost and very lightweight. It serves a niche.

HMMM,
It says it bonds to metal.and all their examples are on metal surfaces

Still works fine on fiberglass?
How much did you need for the vette?

Also ,did you brush or spray it on?I would think it would go on thicker by brush

Thanks for that link, that stuff seems to work!

You raised the RPM because of the lower rear end, to make your driving sweet spot and you hit the area where your system has drone. Evil Twin has some great posts on Drone. The line of his that I liked best was "all cat back's have drone if you do not hear it you are either deaf or in denial" He took a lot of hits for that comment but I agree with him. I have the stingers an A4, 3.15 the drone hits right at 70mph if you add the stuff your are talking about the sound in the cabin will get louder but the drone will remain about the same. The drone was driving me crazy. I went with the quiet car stuff about 5 gal. of it . The drone is still there but now I can tolerate it. It has two advantages, it was made for cars and you can paint it on places you just can not get mat to stick.

That is exactly what I am hoping to get out of this,if nothing else,my car will be quieter when I change the catback

No problems with it bonding,eh?

It stick to fiberglass just fine. I called their engineer and had a long talk with her. she sold me on the product.

I used 5 gallons some will say that that makes the car to heavy. DA!

Brush it on 3 cotes are best, places to concentrate are the rear wheel wells under all the carpeting in the trunk and especially the bulk head.

There is NO smell to this stuff when it is dry and very little when applying it.

An odd thing is that even though it is dry the sound damping quality's improve over 2 weeks.
